different take, I trying to figure out how to do an "orton effect".
Any tutorials out there?

I think the biggest problem is that you selection of starting image is not very appropriate choice for an Orton Effect. (Named after Michael Orton who first used the technique as a sandwich of two slide film images. As it turns out, I stumbled across this effect a couple years ago, on my own. Only later I discovered that it would not be named the "Radtech1 Effect"!)

Your shot is WAY too busy. And it is monochrome. And WAY to busy. To be effective, you need clear lines and areas where it can be turned into expanses with little or no detail. Your shot is WAY too busy.

Here is a couple examples that are more appropriate starting images. Not saying that they are great photos, but they are good examples of the kind of shot you want to select.

Radtech, I appreciate the insight. I had not considered the amount of clutter in my image would create a problem but in pondering I can see your point.
