Anyone here been checking out some of the Sony(KM) users groups and forums.

Sony's new Carl Zeiss 24-70/2.8 and 70-300 f/4-5.6 SSM drive (USM ring type) lenses look to be very cool. Also could a FF or near FF Sony be in the works with the launch of a new 24-70mm FF lens, wow!

Don't forget, Sony bought the rights to use the name Zeiss, not the engineering or any blueprints.

Well they bought KM (photo division) and they (KM) made some d*** nice glass so if it's a lens made by the old KM group, under the Sony corp. with a Zeiss name but takes good pictures, why not?

I think the key point should be, you don't bother making a HUGE f/2.8 expensive FF zoom and nothing but a 1.5x to put it on do you?

Had to pick up repaired 24-70 2.8L lens for the Canon, and took the twisted tour of the 700 with mounted 24-70 Zeiss 2.8 lens & dual battery grip.
Deviously hotter than s,, . Picking it up tomorrow.
Features I could only hope for in my face.
The stack of L lenses and 30D getting packed for a wedding gift.

Is this true? I read that Sony designs and produces the "Zeiss" lenses, but Zeiss has approval over the designs of the lens. From what I gather, Zeiss does participate in the lens development, but Sony actually produces the lenses.

Carl Zeiss is no longer with us, and hasn't been for quite some time. Sony's merely using his brand name.

This could clear up the Zeiss Glass debate.

I still have the Contax RTS system with their glass.

I'm sure it is more then just a name if it was a full Sony only lens why not call the 70-300 an SSM Ziess too?

Zeiss is involved at some point in the lens design. Else who cares as long as it's a good lens what's in a name?

Zeiss does a lot more today then just photos, they appear to be a lot like Nikon in many ways.

So Zeiss lenses make glasses just for Sony, that means that a similar lens could never be done for Canon Cameras?
