What Slik tripod is it, can you not use it for your XTi? All tripod screw threads are the same.

Ask me in a week....I just picked up a Flashpoint carbon fiber tripod from Admorama. I'm putting it through the paces tomorrow. I will be using it w/ a 40D and 300 f/4 IS.

I bought a Promaster 6400 for $82 after tax for my XT, but only because I couldn't afford the higher-end brands.

If the specs are correct your Slik will support 3.5 lbs. That is not enough for your XTi and not enough in portrait mode.
Like many of the guys have stated earlier. the Mnafrotto 190XPROB or the 055XPROB and at least the 486RC2 or better yet the 488RC2 if you like the ball head.

Not to mention the fact that load ratings are a joke. If the the load rating is close to your load, you are going to be in trouble.

just found a used Manfrotto 3021 BPRO and 322RC2 head for my XTi. It appears that it will be a sweet setup. Maybe a tad bit heavy but solid!

+1 for Manfrotto 055XPROB & 488RC2 head!
This is a VERY sturdy rig that provides excellent stability for that added sharpness in your shots. I also agree with what tjrenegade said, though, this is not the lightest set up you could put together (you'll need carbon fiber for that! $$$). Research this forum -- LOTS of other nods for this particular arrangement.
It's money well spent!

That's actually quite inexpensive for a quality tripod. A Gitzo made from carbon fiber with a good ballhead might be $800.
With tripods, you can get stable, light and cheap - pick any two but you can't have all three.
The Gitzo's are light and stable but not cheap. This is stable and cheap (relatively speaking) but it is not light.
Read these links on the value of a good tripod:

Without good support you basically will have a very difficult time getting the max resolution out of your lenses. You also gain a bunch more latitude in exposure if you have a decent tripod.
based on this, this is a very good value.
