Hi all

I am getting married July 09 and have just started my planning an getting various people booked.

One of my biggest responsibilities is to book the photographer.

Where do i begin?

Am i likely to find somewhere that will provide me with the full res images? as lot i have looked at do not provide this service as they keep copyrights and sell the images on thier website?

Can anyoone recommend sum1 in North West of England(liverpool)

I plan on meeting with any possible photographers, are there any things i should make sure i get as part of my package?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Congratulations!!

Work on word of mouth first. If you know of people local to you (friends & family) look at who they used. If they were happy, that would be good enough for me.

If not, take a look in local classifieds or web directories (like www.photographers.co.uk ) for some contacts. Take the time to go and meet with them personally and ask to look at their portfolio.

Don't go in there with the thought that they have to be up to a certain standard, if they've got a good reputation, trust in their work. We're getting married in October and there's been plenty of jokes about me being critical, or doing it all myself. But, to be honest, I'm happy enough in placing my trust in a pro in this respect. If someone we know has used someone and been happy with the results, that's good enough for me.

Congratulations x2

There are some photographers that will offer a DVD of images as part of some of their packages. You will have to check that the DVD offered is high res - some are offered low res for emailing purposes only.

Then maybe if you want an album or not - whether you want a magazine type album (like GraphiStudio) or matted album (like Jorsegen albums).

Also another thing to consider is what type of photographer do you want? Do you want a photojournalist type photographer who is like a fly on the wall or a more traditional photographer who does more formals or a mix of the two?

Another couple of directories to help you search for a photographer are www.photographmywedding.co.uk and www.ourweddingmemories.co.uk

When my wife and I got married, we were totally broke. Since we needed pictures taken, we asked a friend to use both of our cameras, and take as many pictures as possible for us. We ended up with 20-30 good shots, and we were perfectly happy. I think we paid her $25 or so. I just set up both cameras (300D w/ 70-200 f4 L and xt w/ 28-105 + 430EX) and let her do her thing. Of course, the church we got married in was a photographer's dream... There was more than enough light! It was beautiful.

Whaaaat??

You post on a photographers forum saying "get your mate to do it" and if you get 20 photos then thats good enough.

Anyway back to the OP, try http://www.johnprendergastphotography.co.uk/ or try this directory for a list of professionally qualified photographers in and around Liverpool http://www.thempa.com/

Photographers own the copyright to the photos under UK law and there is nothing at present to change that. Try asking for a set of images along with a license to make your own prints, this is a totally different thing and many photographers do offer this.

Thats exactly what I did. He was a pretty good photographer but the looks of things when I was running though the guys portfolio but what swayed it for me was that we agreed that I could have a copy of all the processed / unprocessed raw images at the end of the day.

Thanks for all your responses guys

I have narrowed it down to a few now, found one company in particular that are a husband and wife and offer a full package including copy of images.

Copyright, as with anything you own, can be sold. Most photographers will hesitate to completely sell an image to another person, as they won't be able to make any money off it. However, if your budget is high enough (or for whatever reason the photographer doesn't have an issue with that) you can buy the IP surrounding the photograph. If a photographer is being paid to take photos, then often a contract will stipulate that photos taken while being paid by *employer* belong to *employer*.

This is a totally seperate issue to what the OP is asking.

My only advice is to choose someone you feel comfortable with and like the style they shoot! We got a guy recommended to us by a friend who does wedding photography and live music photography so it was more the style we wanted. We we got along well enough to bounce ideas round and it worked really well, at no point did we feel we couldn't have what we wanted!
