I tried some mtb photography during the '96 Olympics outside Atlanta. The shots in the sun came out fine because shutter speeds were in the 1/1000 and faster range. The challenge is when you do not have bright lighting. Cyclists go fast (especially at the Olympic level). I watched a professional photographer take shots of the Olympians riding by in shady areas. He used a SLR with fast flash sync and panned. A wide angle lens allowed him to hold the camera low and fire away without looking through the viewfinder. This angle allowed him to also capture the faces of the crowds in the background.
