so my parents told me i can get a camera for my grad/christmas present, but i need to start pricing things out now. i'm looking at trying to find a good deal on a closeout 10D or a great condition used 10D. i also want a decent wide angle lense for landscape and mountain bike shooting. i like a little distortion but nothing like a fisheye. are there any killer deals out there right now? what's a good relatively low cost and relatively wide angle lens? i'd love to be able to afford the 17-40mm L but i'm going to assume i can't. how much could i expect prices to drop from now until christmas? my budget it probably around $1200 or so for a lens and body, with maybe some extra thrown in that i can save up.
don't buy from this link

The domain is registered to a guy in Texas, the site is hosted in Canada, and the mailing address is Germany. They don't take credit cards, only MoneyGram cash transfers. If you must use a credit card, they want your date of birth, driver's license, and social security number.
Are those enough red flags for you?

Other than those little things, did it sound like a good deal? :-)
I would run like hell.

yeah i'll most likely go that route and try to get the mkI, if i can find it, but either would do. i'm getting a nice pay check the next month so i might have enough for another lens after that. the 17-40mm f/4 L haunts me.
there are some good used prices on amazon.com. are those scams too?

As of 8:00 Friday morning (EDT) B&H has 3 used 10Ds under $1000. Better hop to it, though 'cause they go quickly!
Have Fun,

Buydig is a good bet. Not sure how an 8 of 10 rating makes someone a charlaton.....for a camera retailer, that's gold.
I've madeseveral purchases from buydig and have gotten great service. Their CS doesn't get the greatest ratings, but the money saved is usually worth the risk of a return hassle.
I always get my orderes in about 3 days.

You have to be kidding. Read this from the Buydig site:
2. All returns are permitted within 10 days from the date of receipt of merchandise. Returned merchandise will be accepted by us only if all conditions A, B, C, D below are met. There is a 10% - 20% restocking fee on all merchandise returned, shipping and handling charges are not refundable. We are not responsible for any shipping and handling charges of merchandise being returned to us. Some video products, if found defective upon your receiving them, cannot be returned for exchange. Rather they must be repaired by a service center of the manufacturer in your area.
Any items that are opened or used are subject to a restocking fee even if they are returned within the ten day period!
www.JR.com 30 day returns
www.bhphotovideo.com 14 day returns
No restocking fees.
The cheapest price is only the best deal if they deliver it and it works.

I admit I was mostly thinking of "Abes of Brooklyn" when I made my post.. BuyDig may not be as bad as Abe's.
Still.. they aren't getting my business.
ROB there are still a number of 10D's in the forum marlketplace...

You have to be kidding. Read this from the Buydig site:
What's so unreasonable about those policies? So they charge a restocking fee and give you 4 days less to make up your mind. It's written out in plain english (which is more than you can say for the majority of camera shops :D). They're not B&H by any means, but they ship what you order with no bait and switch or email to "call and confirm your order". Plus they're less expensive on most items and offer free shipping.
I was simply recounting my own (and friends) experiences with them.

I got a Nikon D100 for Christmas 2 years ago with the additional software and additional battery pack. My wife bought it at www.JR.com . I hated the camera. I returned it to them. No problems, No restocking fee. Full refund.
I bought a Canon 300mm f/4 IS from B&H. I used it for a weekend and decided it didn't meet my needs. I returned it to B&H. Full refund. No hassles, no restocking fee.
You are correct in that Buydig clearly states their return policy. I didn't say they were dishonest, I said I wouldn't buy from them.

Fair enough.
Guess you have to have your mind made up before clicking that last button when ordering from some places.

FKJGHKLDfhld, yes they are awesome deals but i don't want to really rush my parents just yet. they have to finalize everything on a school loan and they only told me about this a couple days ago. last time i talked to them they told me to get pricing, so next time we talk, we'll talk about when, and i will emphasize the importance of jumping on a deal fast :]
thanks for pointing me to other listings.

alright, i talked with the folks again and it looks like whenever i can give them a list of the stuff i need, they'll try to get it ASAP. i can't believe this is happening  :D
only thing is i can't buy off a buy&sell board because they need legitimate receipts to turn in to the school to get reimbursed. are used B&H or amazon orders still 'legitimate'? do you get the same type of receipt as you would buying something new?
on the B&H page, they don't list what comes with the camera. is it just the body with no battery or memory card?

It is mostly the slimeball camera vendors that try to charge you extra for the standard parts, like the battery.
Note that most new camera bodies are sold with no lens. Sometimes used camera bodies are sold with a lens attached. A few cameras are also sold as a kit (with lens), but there are very few choices.

Used gear from B&H comes with the same kind of receipt and customer support that you get with new gear. I bought some stuff from them on one of thier eBay auctions...great experience and great price.
