OK - I got it now. Thanks Rad!
I find that in Levels I can adjust the mid-range slider for considerably lighter mid-tones without compromising anything. It gives the scene a little more detail in both the mid and lower range of tones that I feel is an improvement.

However, it is your call as the artist.
