Hi all,

I got headache to read about color management and profiling and matching monitors with printers and so......

So what is the best way to get everything done correctly?
I have got my spyder3 yesterday and i did calibration for my monitors [PC CRT and MBP Laptop] and i can't be sure if i did calibrating them correctly, so how can i check that? and i have the bundle for printers as well but i don't know how to calibrate my printers, so far i try with my HP LaserJet 3500 for now before i got my Epson, i didn't know how to calibrate my printer but i did few prints tests and all colors seems close but not good enough [darker, and with black and white it has some magenta cast].

So how do you all create your own profiles in calibrations? i think after i used my calibration device and created a profile and i checked photos i can't tell if i did that correct, but the best thing that i found is that the photos on photoshop are exactly the same when i do save for the web, and they all are the same look from DPP to photoshop, is that means successfully done?

If you go to system prefs > displays > color you'll see the name of the active profile. That should be the one created by the spyder.
In the list there's probabely also some kind of 'generic' setting (powerbook_display.icc or whatever). Switching between the two should give a visible difference.

No experience with the Spyder 3, but I think the calibrating of the monitor should be pretty much self explanatory. I suspect the thing comes with a (pdf) manual?
That'll probably explain the printer profiling.
Few links in the link from my sig on how to use the profile once you've made it.

No. That means you've probabely set up the software right. Correct settings in the link from my sig BTW.

Thank you very much for your answers.
I think i got headache from your links in fact, but i will give them more reading than before now, and i think i reset my settings in photoshop and DPP according to your preference or someone else on the net.

Thought this might be helpful...
I have Vista
Right click on empty place on screen...
Select personalize....
Select display settings...
Select advanced...
You may now look at the profiles for your display and select a default.
Hope this is helpful. :)

I use Windows XP on my PC, and i can see which profile i use, it is that one i created after calibration, but i am not sure if my calibration itself is correct.
and on Mac i use Tiger [10.4] and the same with profile i created with calibration, can't tell if i did ok in calibration.

It you process an image in PS and then proof it to the paper you are going to print it on and then print it and it looks the same as it did on your monitor then it is correct. I know what you mean about the headache. I was crazy trying to get my head around it all but I am glad I stuck with it. I am now able to print and trust that it is going to look like what I see on my monitor.

As for profiling the printer, I have not found that necessary.

I see, in fact i believe all that topics about color management is just to match what is in monitor to the print out, so with any methods or ways i can do that then i am in correct path.
So far i didn't print with a photo printer yet, but i used my color laser printer and the prints are all close but still darker than what i see, and i did one B&W printing and it shows cast [Magenta], but that maybe before i did a calibration, but the colors are great anyway [i printed on normal plain A4 papers], so my Epson photo printer arrived the country but still in customs duty so i will keep reading and checking about color management.
