Ok, I read ALL the reviews and stickies on flashes, (sorry),but am still debating. I realize the advantages of the 580, and I can afford it. I have NEVER used an external flash, nor have I had the need to do so, but have been finding that I do now. I have a 24-105L on my Digital Rebel XT (I have the 18-55, a 50mm, and 85mm). I am not new to digital photography, but take pictures frequently, mainly of family and events. I know I need an external flash, but cant decide. My only question regarding these flashes: is it true that the 430ex only operates manually? I have heard of communication problems between camera and flash, so can I have some other opinions, please? It has been a while since I have visited POTN, but whenever I do, I get the BEST advice. Help me make a decision. Thanks in advance!

I'm not familiar with the 430 jmbboss, my friend has one with his XTi and suggested I save the money as I won't find a need for the 580. If you can afford the 580 I suggest you go for it because BH Photo has the coupon code and it works perfect with my XTi, E-TTL or manual. It's great.

Thanks spamster! I appreciate it. I saw your post in the other thread! Is it the PS1107ETGUL promo code?

PS What does the 580 weigh? The 24-105 seems heavy enough, but sometimes needs the flash.

Haha, that was the code I remember using ... well I used a direct link my friend gave me. Is it heavy ... I'd say so. My brick, XTi, and the 580 with battery grip is pretty heavy but my hands are used to it. If you think the 24-105 is heavy enough I don't think it'll make that much of a difference, just more of a workout for you. BH says the 430 is 11.6 ounces, close to one pound and the 580 is 13.2 ounces so not that much heavier.

i just bought the 430 because i dont usually use flash.. but its nice to have one around. i wont ever do studio work or anything like that. so this is what suits my needs, and the results have been great for me. if i ever get to the point where i need a 580 or better.. the 430 will make a great back up.

Thanks spamster for the clarification on the weight and shannyD for reminding me of what I shoot...I will be thinking about both!

The 430 is NOT manual only. The big difference is the GN of the 580 is larger, So its more powerful. The other big difference is the 580 is easier to adjust. The 430 is adjustable but it is easier to do on the 580. The other big difference it that the 580 can be used to master other flashes. Like the 430. The 430 won't master another but does have the slave setting so you can have it mastered by a 550, 580, or 580II.

I have two 430's and love them. The adjustment thing is a little bit of a pain but I am used to it now. I am getting into wedding photography and want to get a 580 for the power. I am also interested in the 580 so I can use it to master my two 430's for some off camera lighting. These are a little more specialized things but something to think about for the future. If you are just looking for an on-camera flash, the 430 would probably work fine. It does tend to hold its value pretty well so you wouldn't lose too much money if you just hated it and wanted a 580.

I really don't think you will hate the 430, I imagine you would love it. Some day, you will probably want to up to another with more features but that is up to you and your shooting style. If you have the money and nothing better to do with it, then go for it. You won't be dissapointed in the 580 either. If you could put the extra 150 to better use then go for the 430 and you will still be happy.

Better yet, go for the 430 and send me the extra 150 and I will put it to good use:mrgreen::rolleyes::mrgreen:

I had the 430 and traded it for a 580. There is nothing wrong with the 430 but I had a few weddings in dark places and found myself needing more power.

If I was in your position I would go with the 580. The extra power can never hurt.

Cute! Up until recently, I didnt feel the need for an external flash. I dont take professional shots, I just dont wish to adjust all the time. I take a lot of candids of my kids and family, and it would be a pain to have to say "Wait, do that again after I adjust the settings on this flash." I will pay the extra $150 for the convenience and ability to be spontaneous while taking pictures. I suppose I just dont want to regret my purchase.
