I was sitting in my balcony shooting moving cars, and here were my settings:
50mm f1.4 lens @ f2.2, 1/20 sec, ISO 1600, Manual mode, w/Cfn. 13-1 (focus selection by multicontroller), AI Servo, center focus point selected, IBM 1GB Microdrive inside, Large JPG size. Before this lens was on the camera, and earlier in the day, I had the 17-40mm on the camera, but didn't take the card out at all today.
-I shot maybe 8 shots, during a 5 minute period, never allowing the camera to go into sleep mode. Suddenly, the camera froze, with the center focus point continuosly illuminated, without me touching the shutter button. It just froze. No buttons worked at all EXCEPT the multicontroller/joystick thingie. I pressed it in, and voila! Back to normal. I did not remove the battery to have the freeze stop. Just the multicontroller pressed inward..
I just jinxed myself today by voting in that darned poll!!

Interesting.

It would be really interesting if you could get that to repeat.

Could you tell if the camera was "trying" to get into sleep mode? Or, was it "trying" to write to the CF card? You already mentioned that it probably had nothing to do with the lens connections, and you weren't really fooling with it oddly.

Interesting. Should I get a lock up I'll try manipulating the multi-controller before attempting to remove and replace the batteries.

AND AGAIN!!
Only this time, the multicontroller didn't do anything.
Had to remove the battery.
