G3 set on auto with the 420EX flash
I'm in a low light gymnasium environment (Christmas concert). All the pictures came out having red eye. Any tips on preventing this from happening?

Were you using maximum zoom? You might have been too far away. If you use a more wide angle setting and move physically closer then the angle between the flash head and the lens increases and the red eye will dissappear.

Is it possible to use a cable that connects from the camera to the EX420?
I do not even know if they are available, but if they are the flash could physically be moved further from the lens which could help.
If they are available and anyone knows about them ket me know as I would be keen to get one myself.

You can get such a cable. I believe this is the one you need:

try this : fire a preflash (*-button), then the cam measures also the light again and perhaps you've blinded the people enough so to prevent red-eyes... Make sure you've got new batteries in the flash or the flash won't charge fast enough and all benefit (and the people) are gone
that's how the red-eyes reduction in the cams functions anyways... canon uses some constant light, other manufacturers use a preflash
