Just bought this lens and I'm pretty impressed with the first shots. here are some samples:

Definitely a step up from the kit lens. A little soft at 18mm wide open, but that's expected.

Nice. I got the Canon 18-55 EF-S with the 20D as a kit, but I doubt I'll use it much. It's an okay lens, but not my cup of tea.

Those are really quite good Bodog.
Thanks for posting.
How is it for flare? I notice some in 3912

Yeah, there is. That was almost directly into the sun. From that I don't think it's going to be a problem. BTW, thanks for the review link. I hadn't been able to find a review.

In that review I posted above, it beats the 17-40L in most categories.
I still really like the Sigma 12-24, but it doesnt allow front filters which makes it slightly undesirable.
So, the 18-50 looks like a candidate Too bad it only fits 1.6 crop sensor cameras.

Sigma warns that using double filters (read polarizer) on this one may cause vignetting also.

Very interesting! So a real competetion for 17-40L? I like the fact that it's equivalent to 29-80mm. A really good walkaround lens.

Really?
I wonder if that would be the case even stopped down.
Usually when you would use a polarizer, you would be stopping down for greater DOF. So that should help.
That first shot of the dog is fantastic! And that was 18mm wide open at F2.8. That's very impressive

So, you like it much better than the 18-55 kit?

Yes, it's consistent F2.8!
I hadn't heard about it either until this thread.
I believe it is brand new.

I just read the lens review, and the posted images all look horrible. Do I not understand something?
I grabbed my 20D and took a picture of my display with the master chart which is very detailed and in focus anong with the fussy images below it.
The 20D focused on the master and the BB 211 Beta conversion from raw looks just like the master chart. Not fuzzy at all. Other then the LCD dots the image looks perfect. I'll post the image to my Pbase soon if anyone is interested.
My display unit is a 17" Neovo LCD.

Sigma doesn't specify, but I would assume only wide open. My open sky test shots don't show any sign of vignetting.
And, yes i like it better than the kit lens. I notice that I'm using less contrast and color saturation boost in processing RAW files now. Haven't seen any purple fringing yet either, but probably just haven't had the right background yet...

I wonder if his 10D has a focus problem?

Difficult to say how reliable this one is, but I have seen many others on dpreview forum who have tested this new lens and it seems like a nice alternative to 17-40L. Probably we will see more reviews in coming days...

Ouch, that's a deal breaker.

The images in the review are 200% magnifications of a small area in the chart.
