I went into a local Ritz Camera today looking for a zoom lens to play with on my 20D for the weekend. It's the only local store, and all they have is a Quantaray 70-300 F/4-5.6. I didn't buy it, but I think I may be willing to blow $200 on it just for "fun". That is, unless you all convince me it as absolute crap and I should just wait til next week to get my 70-200 F/4L or 300mm F/4L. :)

It's crap and over priced, the canon 75-300mm is much better.. and cheaper. www.amazon.com

Given the choices you mention, I'd wait a week.
Heck, I'd wait a month or two before I'd spend any amount of money on a Quantaray lens. As a general rule of thumb, everything sold under the Quantary label is made by someone else. I've heard different opinions as to who makes their lenses, Sigma being the name that comes up most often. Sigma does make some good lenses, but they also make some real dogs, and to be sure, most of the Quantaray lenses fall into the latter category regardless of who (or what) makes them. If you did buy the lens, you'd be kicking yourself in a week.....maybe sooner.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I actually didn't know Canon had a 75-300mm in the same "class" of lenses. If they had that one in the store I may have actually given it a try even though I'm getting an L lens next week.
Ok, thanks guys, you talked me out of it. I'll spend one more weekend shooting my son's football with the 50mm prime.

CDS ~ As for Quantaray lenses?
I am going to use an advanced technical term in regard to those lenses.. so I don't want to lose anyone here..
They are "poop"
I'm sure CDS appreciates your restraint.
BTW, is all that in your sig?

Quantaray's are rumored to be Sigma seconds.
Infamous rule here applies: You get what you pay for.

I had the Canon 75-300 IS, and after I got the 70-200 f4L I kicked myself for not getting it instead of the 75-300 IS in the first place.
Wait - you will not be disappointed. If you want the length, get the EF Extender 1.4 as well. Trust me on this...
Have Fun,

Over all it is junk. Bottom of the barrel lenses. Glass is not were you need to be saving money this is were you should be spending your money. It is better to have a Digital Rebel with good canon glass and save money on the body. I all to often see an expensive camera body with cheep lenses and just do not understand. I saw a guy just this Friday with a 1D MK II and the crappist lens you could buy why I just do not get it. It is the glass the CMOS sensor sees and the better it is the better the image will be depending on the experience of the photographer. Best of luck but spend your money were you need to in glass and save else ware.

I have the 19-35 Quantary. Also got it at Ritz and have to admit I am very satisfied with it. Have had it 2 years and it has performed very well on a D30 and 10D. Wanted a Sigma 15-30 at the time and wasn't able to get one. It's build isn't that bad either. Has a metal mount and it focus's very quickly. Had intended to sell it after gettting the Sigma 15-30, but instead gave up on the 15-30 and kept the Quantary.

I had that lens (19-35) for about 5 days. On my D30 it was very soft. :(

I bought that lens (or something very similar) about 5 years ago when I got my APS camera. I think I paid about $179 for it and thought it was a lot of money for a lens (little did I know).
Anyway, I used it for about 2 years as my primary lens and got a lot of nice pictures. Then it sat in a closet for a couple of years. I pulled it out a few months ago when I got my D60. Guess what, it would only work from 70-240, then would grind and make funny noises and wouldn't focus.
I ended up throwing it in the garbage. As I stated, I was ignorant at the time and didn't have the collective wisdom of this board. But since you are seeking the collective wisdom of this board, you have no excuse. :D

Is Quantaray a word that's even allowed around here. Don't ever make me a moderator or that word will show as (OOPS) when typed :-)

Man, am I sorry I even bought it up. Please don't brand me for life now, I was just bored with no lenses this past weekend, and with no good camera store nearby the Quantaray was my only choice. But I held off.
Look for the upcoming L's in my sig starting later this week. A neighbor of mine showed up with his "hobby" camera, a Mark II with 300mm F/2.8L IS on it, so I can't very well show up with a Quantaray on my 20D after that.

Quantaray making good lenses is like Lada or Skoda making good cars
You're out of date. Skoda make some decent cars nowadays - since the VAG buy out. (and no, I don't own one).

I guess I am .. it's been 10 years since I left the UK .. back in those days the only reason Skoda's had heated rear windows was to keep your hands warm when push starting them
