I don't want to be mean but its not technically a Jack Russell as recognized by organizations. That's the reason you never see any. Jacks are technically suppose to be over 51% white. I'm not saying its a bad dog, but its pretty much just a mutt terrier. The ears are also larger then a typical Jacks. I'm sure its a great dog, and in many ways it conforms better then most at being a Jack. Jacks aren't even recognized by the AKC anyways.

Here are two more sites with jack "standards"

I understand what you are saying, and this isn't aimed at you in particular Yanchula, but I just wanted to say a couple of things on the subject as I see it. :-)

Jack Russells aren't recognized by The Kennel Club (that's The Kennel Club) and as such aren't a pedigree breed. They are working dogs and the lack of recognition in pedigree breeders' circles is a good thing in my opinion - and probably why they have survived as such a hardy breed. That's how it has always been over here. I understand that in recent years some recognition has been made in the US for it to be a pedigree breed, but as I said, that isn't how things are over here.

Once the breeders get involved and start faffing about with things you tend to end up with monstrosities (don't get me started on bulldogs) with all sorts of problems, all in the interests of impressing some old fool at the show bench.

A Jack Russell lover knows a Jack Russell when they see one and they don't need to be referring to breed standards to appreciate one. Matts Jack Russell is lovely, as is yours Yanchula, along with all the others posted here. Let's all appreciate the diversity that comes with the breed and also appreciate the history behind them. :-)

And mine was the only one out of the litter of 6 that didn't "conform" to the standard of >51% white.....Oh well.

Hey everyone newbie here with my first post... can't say how thrilled I was to find this thread. Aren't these little stinkers the best dogs ever? I couldn't resist so I took a few shots tonight of my two little active "jokers". Unfortunately it was night and I had to use the built-in flash. Not great photos, but bear with me, this camera is new to me since Christmas :)

Sugar, my rescued 5 yr old Jack Russell Terrier. She also participated in JRTCA sanctioned trials and rec'd 4th place ribbon on her first time doing "go-to-ground".

Opie, who I had since he was 7-weeks old. This a typical true-to-the-breed, ornry little terrier... but he has his sweet moments too. He owns my heart! He is almost 5 yrs old.

Actually JRTs are now recognized by the AKC as far as I know, they are called "Parsons Russell Terriers".

The Black Jacks are not actually purebred JRTs, they are crossed with something, and I know a few people in the US started bringing them into this country as an "exotic breed" and selling them for quadruple the amount that they should have been sold for. (At one time Linda Tripp of Monica-gate fame was involved I believe)

I love the Black cross posted here, she's ADORABLE, but there are definitely non-JRT traits there. The body is not the right type, she looks like she is part lab. But none of that really matters, she's fantastic!

oh holy cats, Opie is FANTASTIC!

"Jack Russell Terriers are a type, or strain, of working terrier; they are not purebred in the sense that they have a broad genetic make-up, a broad standard, and do not breed true to type. You will see different "types" of JRTs, from long-bodied, short, crooked legs to a more proportioned length of body and longer legs. This is a result of having been bred strictly for hunting since their beginning in the early 1800's, and their preservation as a working breed since. " Quoted from the JRTCA (http://www.terrier.com/breed/history.php4).

The black terrier looks like a Patterdale Terrier which is a type of Fell Terrier. You could say a Patterdale is a black Fell Terrier, and a Jack Russell is a (predominantly) white Fell Terrier. They are closely related, although not the same by definition.

Nothing special. Just put in monochrome in DPP then add sharpness. Mostly its just finding the right angles, that's what I have found makes a photo really pop. I have been working hard at improving my composition. Thanks for the compliment.

The last one I posted was a low light shot with a 1 sec exposure

I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this question.

Sugar, as I mentioned earlier, participates in Jack Russell Trails, races, go-to-ground, barn hunt, etc. What I'd like to know is what sort of lens do you recommend for this type of "action" photography? The events are held outdoors in sunny N. California under blue skies with some shade in the scene provided by large pine trees so it can be pretty contrasty. What focal lenth do you recommend. Also, what lens would be good without having to spend a small fortune? I'm thinking maybe the 70-200 f/4L because the price is good for this quality. Thanks!

willy b
18th of February 2008 (Mon), 18:14
Well i have just ordered the 70-200f4, so not that it helps you, but i'm very excited lol!

I'd guess 2 lenses. One 70-200f4 and something wider for the closer action shots, your 17-85 would do well!

The most important part to making the shots work is getting to ground level. So if that means you need to be further away, go with the 70-200. I'd say go with your current lens and shoot, then at the end of the day look at what you have. If you think your images would benifit from being tighter in, go for it.

OMG, what do you mean "not technically correct"? These are awesome shots!! You really captured her well, showing her true JRT personality! She looks "bigger than life"!! And the last one........ OMG..... my jaw just dropped!! What a character she is! I bet you missed her something terrible! So glad to see you've both been reunited!! :) Did you happen to use your new 70-200 lens for these shots? (comments please)

Yanchula, your shots are always great, too!!

Thats so funny with the big sticks, mine does the same. Today at the park Hera found half a rabbit in the river. She pulled it out and brought it over to me very proudly. The other day she found a coconut she dragged out. These dogs are great, and gross. lol

Hello, all. I'm new here. Actually just got my 30D this week, and it's going to take me a while to get used to the layout. Here's one of my first attempts with the camera. It's also my first attempt at PP (other than cropping). Of course, nothing fancy, but I'll learn as I go.

Here's my boy, Jack Daniels, a.k.a. The Beast, lounging on the couch. I really liked his expression in this shot. It almost looks as though he is daydreaming.

All my dogs (2 Beagles and Gisele) prefer the rawhide and pigs ears over just about anything else. We make sure we don't get any from China, etc... usually only US made. We tried cow hoofs and they tended to splinter so we don't buy them...but thanks for the advise.
