View Full Version : So, how did you pay for your camera?

I'm just wondering how everyone paid for their camera.
I just got my Rebel a few months ago at amazon.com for $899 with kit lens. I have a part time job that barely pays for what I need so I had to charge it all to an amazon credit account of mine. :( I just couldn't resist.
Right now I'm thinking aobut returning it but since it's been more than 30 days I'll only get 80% back I love the camera but I just can't take it where I want since it's so big.
I plan on paying it off with money I make on x-mas and tax return money in jan.. Atleast thats what I'm planning to do. :(
Some one cheer me up please :( *cries*
Gotta love making min payments of $24 a mont til then and losing $20 to interest..

I'm extremely close to buying a 20D within the next few days (I hope) and I'll be putting it on a credit card and paying that off. I'm a college student with a part-time job working on campus, and I have enough money in savings to pay for it, so I'm seriously thinking about spending the money on that.

One thing with credit cards... don't spend money unless you have it unless it is an emergency. Although, some of us might think camera equipment falls in that emergency category :D
I buy my stuff with credit card, then pay off my balance every month.

haha, yeah I know what you mean. Luckily for the most part I've been able to constrain myself so that I don't buy something with a credit card unless I already have the money in one of my accounts that I can pay it off with. Then when I get the bill for it I pay the full amount so I don't get charged interest.
This has helped me from going on buying frenzies, as well as keeping me out of debt and helping me retain good credit.

Or did you want to trade and/or exchange it or ditch the debt? :?

Try AMEX. It adds that extra security (double-warranty up to 1 year) and IS the same thing as money as you HAVE to pay it by the next billing date.

:D I got my equipment financed by a leasing company. They payed the camera store and I got the goods. 10D grip 70-200 2.8L Tamron 19-35 2 filters 550 speed lite cf cards and some other goodies. The leasing company charges far less than a credit card. I then started to freelance for local papers. Now I am set up as my own company. You don't even register it ( in Canada) if you call your biz your first and last name. Because I am in biz and leasing my equipment I get to right off %100 of the payments. The payments last for three years at which time you can buy out the equipment for %10 of the original purchase price. I wonder what a three year old 70-200 2.8L would go for on e-bay? Now before you say sure it is easy for you because you live in a big city, my town has 1,700 people the closest large town is half an hour away which has about 36,000. Smaller communities are starving for photographers who can create big city images. 4-6 pictures a month pays for my camera and I get to continue to work my craft. Well this worked for me. I wish you all the best. If you can,t find away to keep the camera don't sweat. You can still find a cheaper digital and still freelance. It is not the camera it is the photographer.
Take good care

Just ignore the negativity, and like you said, it's non of their business how you were able to obtain your camera. You simply replied to this thread to give the poster some more input to the info requested and that was it.

That's the main thing stopping me from selling things on ebay.... my parents are huge pack rats, and I think it somehow genetically trickled down to me as well to some extent. I logically know that I should get rid of something, but I just can't bring myself to do it in a lot of instances.

I am paying with a cahier's check. I have a shopping list that was my wish list, minus the 24mm tilt/shift lens. 2 cameras, 5 lenses, memory cards (SD and CF), 7 filters (at 77mm and 50mm), new bags, new tripod head w/ 3 extra quick-release plates, light meter and flash and more
$14500 and change after taxes. Settlement came in from a car accident. This is only the tip of the iceberg. My wife said I could spend $15k MAX. The remainder will be filled with paper and ink for my i9100 printer and some framing material and some more lighting strobes.

Dont view it as debt, see it more as constructive bankruptcy, a game the whole family can play.
Mine was paid for over a period of years (about 6) usually with a credit card (which was paid of at the end of the month) because I dont like walking into a shop with a fist full of cash and having to wait for them to count it. Most of it was bought from one shop :) yes they like it when I come to visit.

Several parts of my buying plan:
- only buy what I can afford -- my house payment, my kid's college savings, and my retirement savings come before my toys.
- sell what I don't use -- yeah, it is hard sometimes, but it helps to look at that unused stuff as cash. For example, my scuba gear has been untouched since my wife got pregnant three years ago, it takes up a lot of space in the garage, and it probably won't be used until my two-year old is a teenager, so as much as I love diving, it will probably go soon. Also, it just makes me feel good to get rid of clutter.
- buy used when possible -- I've saved a lot of money by having stuff that is not quite brand new. I've also been able to resell stuff I've bought that is fine but just not right for my needs with little loss and little regret.
- when I have to buy new, use my no-annual-fee, cash-back platinum MasterCard to extend the warranty and give me extra protection. I pay the balance in full each month.
- talk to my wife before making any significant purchase -- we give each other a reality check by talking over any purchase over $75 or so. Sounds extreme, but it works, and we both stay happy this way.
All this probably sounds extreme or excessive, but I have never had to deprive myself (I've got skis, scuba gear, bikes, camping gear, etc.), just ocassionally delay gratification. And I look at the money I save as an investement in future play, as I plan to retire early and really enjoy my toys someday.

No one else can do it for you, but you _can_ do it! Here are a couple things that I have found useful:
- a lot of people feel a letdown after they get that new thing; if you have felt that before, try to remember it when you feel temptation
- saving money is not all deprivation; keep an eye on your bank account balance, and you will probably feel good as you see it go up
- if you slip up, don't let yourself get knocked off track; admit the mistake to yourself, forgive yourself, then resume your good habits
I'm no credit counselor, but there are plenty of them out there, don't hesitate to use one. Good luck!

If you haven't got the cash - (who has?) get one of the many credit cards that offer interest free introductory period of 6 - 9 months. Divide the cost by 6 to 9 and pay off each month. If you can't afford the monthly amount SAVE UP (remember that?) until you have enough of a deposit so you can.
So there.

No I don't think so.
I maxed my credit card 16 months ago to get my 10D + Lenses + Bag + other stuff (memory, spare batteries, etc). I finally cleared the credit card debt at the start of this week.
I have decided to be more patient now though, I will save and only buy on CC what I can pay fully by due date. The interest I save will let me buy more goodies.

I have a question re: financing. Wouldn't it be cheaper to take a loan from a bank than to finance the purchase w/ a credit card. CC rates could be as high as 30% sometimes a bit more.

Did not intend purchasing 20D till next spring earliest. Then up comes this company offering it at £1059 + 9 months interest free credit. Now that is competitive.
I've weakened - was then terrified to tell my boss but she agreed meekly (what has she done?)
Now the long wait ....
Can I have advice now on how to wait? Much more useful than talking about mere money

Bought 300d at Buy.com on sale and since I have a buy.com credit card I got 3% back to put towards a memory card.
Buy.com is great for memory sales btw.

You can see me begging off the Rosecrans exit on the 405. Smile if you see me, I might just have the camera, you're helping me buy.

My CC interest rate is 20%, my bank charges similar interest on an unsecured personal loan. If I had a mortgage then I could add a bit to that and pay less than half the interest rate.
The CC card is convenient though, no forms, no quiz from bank staff about what I want the money for.

I paid with my own hard earned money! I worked at this job for several months, and the pay was very good, so I was able to get a camera with a lot of money to spare for other expenses.

made some summer money for the 10D. Money for the 17-40 came from designing web pages with a buddy. Here's our site too, www.imaginari.ca :).

I have an account with my local photo store. For my 20D it was 1/2 down, and 3 months to pay the balance.
Try getting that from an online vendor! 8)
Have Fun,
