18-200 : what are they waiting for?

I believe they will have one out soon "17-200IS 3.5-5.6" It would be a great lens, if it comes out on the 24th i wll get this baby right away, but i did just get a 17-85 for xmas, but oh well to hard not to get a lens like this for everyday use.

for me I wont get it. such a long range must has it's weaknesses.

I thought the same a few months back, and started a war by accident about it. But luckly there are some third party alternatives.

Surely it will have weaknesses (slow AF, small apertures) BUT it would be one kick @$$ travel lens! Especially if it has the quality or better than that of the Nikon!

Because Canon's engineers cannot exceed Sigma's, thus will be unable to justify the $300 more price tag they'll need.

I'm pretty sure Canon can make a better 18-200 than Sigma and justify charging what Nikon does. Better build quality, optical quality, 4 stop IS and a slightly faster lens.

EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS for $699 or so.

I would love ot see it out, I know the Nikon's lens is of pretty good quality, though bokeh isn't the best. I'm sure Canon can beat it, but at a price.

Yeah, and maybe true ring-type USM! Actually, I don't expect that Canon would go for the USM route on such a lens. In the past, these superzooms have been a low-end market product. I'm not saying that they couldn't nor am I saying that they shouldn't - I'm just saying that if you look around the market, at least a few years ago, the superzooms like the 28-200 were all low-end products (with the exception of the 28-300L).

Speaking of the 28-300, Canon needs to release an updated version of that lens for crop format cameras. While expensive, if it's IQ is on par with other L glass, the price would be worth it.

I would be the 1st in line IF AND ONLY IF Canon makes this. I mean why not? If you talk about $$$ and marketing, this is a killer to other companies that have the similar lenses.

actually...i think all of their lenses are now being built with usm.

What's wrong with a Nikkor 18-200VR?

If this lens would live on so many cameras and be so useful why not buy one and stick a D40 or D80 on the thing and call it a day. (or next week's so called new Nikon D60 or D90)

$800 is not cheap for this lens, and you can bet if Canon makes an EFS version they will charge every bit as much as Nikon. So I wouldn't think twice about buying the Nikkor version now and a cheap used body for the thing if not a cheap new one.

Buy the time Canon would build one, you will have had plenty of use from this Nikkor and with the low supply of these Nikkors you won't have any issues getting top dollar for it used on ebay anyhow should you upgrade to a Canon EFS version if it ever is to be made.
