14,500 actuations in six months was apparently more than she could handle. :(
It's still under warranty - but I'll be out of a camera for a while until this one is fixed. :( Going to miss a lot of important assignments this next week. SUCKS.
Was at a party last night - snapping some last minute group shots - out of nowhere the camera started only capturing half of the image! Thought it was lens, switched lenses - same thing! Tried flash, no flash, every setting on camera; same thing! It only captures half of the image!
Thank god this didn't happen @ wedding! Anyways - this always goes to show - if you look into doing important events, paid assignments, etc - HAVE A BACKUP CAMERA.
I'll be using my DRebel as a backup when I can get my hands on 20D...but for now...this sucks!
Hopefully Tempe Camera Repair can get it repaired ASAP....my fingers are x'd!

Always, always have a back up camera. Looks like you learned the hard way. You'll be much better off with a 20D as a main camera and your Rebal as a back up though. Good luck with the repairs.

If it's under Canon USA warranty, you're probably better served sending it directly to the Canon Service Center in Irvine, California. Here's the link:

I was thinking about this - and may do so depending on the timeframe that my local (Canon Authorized) service center gives me.

That's great. I've wasted about 50% of my shutter resource in 6 months. :?

The shutters on the D series cameras should last around 50 actuations, it seems like there might be a bigger problem. As mentioned, specially if you are doing this as a job, carrying a backup camera is a must.
The 1 series are rated for 150K-200K, I cant remember the exact number, but the D series are built for much smaller workloads, whether it be 300D or the 20D.

I feel for you. I dread the day that my Rebel goes south on me. Because I know it will happen before it is eased into the role of back-up camera.
I might be traveling across the state (and this is Texas, so that is a trip) to shoot a horse show in December. I am thinking that I am going to either borrow or rent a back-up. At the VERY least I am taking a film Rebel. It is just that 800 miles is too much to travel to sit on my thumb.

Just got off the phone with Canon tech support - he's never heard of the problem before but it should be 10-15 business days and I'll have to send it to Canon in Irvine.
In the meantime I mentioned that I would probably pick up a 20D. So I quizzed the guy about the lockup issue and he mentioned what we already know. Canon is still investigating but plans to release a firmware upgrade soon to correct the issue.

............well, at least this gives you even more reason to go out there and get the 20D.........FAST!!!
...........then the pain won't be as bad.

Far better to have the 20D and only have to reset it by removing the battery everytime it locks up, compared to having an issue with a 300D that Canon hasn't heard of before.

I am now a proud owner of a Canon 20D. I looked everywhere online but it appeared most reputable vendors were on backorder.
So I had to venture out to a local store who had one left in stock. Maybe this was an inevitable thing. :)
