Hello,

This is my first post with an image so I hope I've posted all the correct information.

I received a 400D for Christmas so I've not had much experience in this field as of yet, I ordered a Sigma 10-20mm which arrived this afternoon for use with the 400D.

While travelling home from Cardiff Bay this evening my Father took an alternative route home, during this route I was able to take the following picture across part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage from Penarth;

http://www.zen91344.zen.co.uk/POTN/Cardiff_Bay_Barrage1.jpg

Make/Model: Canon EOS 400D
Shutter Speed: 20.0 sec
Exposure Program: Manual
Aperture Value: f/14
ISO: 200
Focal Length: 10.0mm

Any input would be appreciated as it's a learning experience.

Cheers

This is pretty cool pic with good colors and a really interesting bridge! What PP did you do?

Nice shot. :-) You are already off to a good start, using your camera in Manual mode and also doing some night photography!

Keep posting and keep up the good work!

Thanks both - I took a few other pictures but they didn't turn out as well, it was blowing an absolute gale so I only jumped out of the car for a minute or two and didn't use the tripod (I tried to rest the camera on part of a gate which was also being blown around in the wind).

What PP did you do?

Sorry for the silly question, but what does PP mean?

Well, that's a surprise to read! I presumed you used a tripod, but guessed it was windy because the image is a little soft. Well done for getting such good results without a tripod! :-)

PP is short for post processing. Post processing in this sense means anything you do to the image to enhance it after it has been taken, quite often in a program such as Photoshop. Some typical examples might be sharpening, increased contrast or altered colour balance.

If you are into night photography you will need to get a tripod, even if you have done well without one! :-D

Thanks Mike :)

We had a tripod in the boot of the car but it was a quick jump out of the car to take the picture.

With regards to the picture I posted, I resized from 3888x2592 to 1024x683 and changed the Red Primary Hue from 0 to +23 and the Red Primary Saturation was moved from 0 to +59.

Here is the original which has only been resized for the forum;

I also took the following picture by turning 90 degrees to the left, this picture has only been resized but you can see the camera shake;

Hopefully next time I'm there it wont be blowing a gale so I can try to take better shots with a tripod.

Not much chance of that in Wales mate! ;)

The bridge shot is great, and all the more so considering your relative inexperience.

Nicely done! I live in Penarth and I took a few photos of the barrage too! I also wish I had a tripod at my disposal!

That's a very nice shot, did you take that from the path by the little roundabout?

The view from the roundabout caught my eye, but as as you're aware, the weather these past few days has been terrible - So we didn't hang around, nor have been been anywhere this weekend as it's so bad.

It'll be nice when the weather eases off and we can get out and about.

I like the lighting in that one above. The reflections in the water are really nice. It would make a nice photo with just the right hand side of the frame cropped into a portrait format, including the sky above.

Thanks, yeah I took it from the little path by the roundabout, shame about the weather too! I sort of cheated with my photo, I took it a few weeks earlier when it was cold enough to freeze the camera to my hand instead of being wet and windy!
