View Full Version : External Flash Question

I just recently purchased a 580ex II for my 20d so I'm definitely a novice with flash photography. Should the 20d automatically detect the external flash whenever I attach it to the camera via the hotshoe? Is there a setting I need to set my camera at in order to operate the 580? The reason I ask is sometimes the flash is not recognized by the camera and sometimes it is.
Or could this be an issue with the hotshoe?
thanks!

If the flash is turned on and ready, if the camera is active, the camera will always know that the flash is attached, assuming there's nothing wrong with the flash or the camera.
I've heard of cases where the tiny screws holding down the hotshoe have come loose causing the flash not to make a good connection with the hotshoe contacts. However, I would think that you would know that just by moving the flash to see if it is wobbly in the hotshoe. You might also be able to press down on the flash to see if that causes the camera to see the flash again. If it does, it's definitely a loose hotshoe screw or two.

Thanks PacAce! I suspected it might be the hotshoe connection as it seemed odd that it would recognize the flash sometimes but not every time. I don't see anything loose or missing. I didn't want to do it but I might have to send the camera in to be serviced by Canon.
