Not exactly sure what type of suggestions you are looking for, but I'd suggest getting access to the players bench area of the ice rink so you don't have to shoot through the plexiglass.

You going to shoot with flash? Remember, you can shoot the flash in high speed mode to sync at a faster speed than 1/250 sec. If you don't use flash...don't be afraid to push your ISO to 1600 or even 3200 . I do it all the time, and with favorable results, provided you nail the exposure. Since it's unlikely you'll be seeing really super fast action, you can probably stop down some and get great shots. Sounds like a fun event to shoot. Good luck

What will you be shooting and are you going to be moving around the gym. If shooting one area you could mount a couple of strobes off camera and balance them with the available light. Otherwise I'd use an on camera for fill balancing it with the available, so it is about 1 or 1 1/2 steps brighter than the gym light, shooting manual at not less than 1/250th

Wasn't anybody even curious what sport was being covered? Amazing how detailed the replies were despite not even having a clue what was being covered...
