Volleyball/Wrestling/Basketball my current gear includes 50mmf/1.8 70-300mm f/4-5.6 non IS...and a Canon 400D

I like my 85 1.8 for indoor sports but I ant no pro.
Im sure you will here that the 70-200 2.8l is the best.

Light wise I would highly suggest owning at least one Alien Bee 1600. I say one because at the wrestling tournament I shot I didn't have the cords to connect the pocket wizards so was forced to shoot one strobe at a time - usually I'd say two. It worked pretty darn good compared to what I was used to in that gym (1600 ISO, 1/500th, 2.8 )...here's an example and EXIF should be embeded.

Shot with the 70-200 2.8 IS - the strobe is invaluable!!
As for b-ball two strobes at least would be needed and set up in a manner not to distract the players/coaches/fans. Volleyball is hit or miss depending on the coach (I coach varsity volleyball and don't allow strobes or flash in my gym - because most people dont know how to use them, if somone showed me they did I'd allow it).

Wrestling: 70-200 f/2.8L
Basketball: 85 f/1.8 and/or 135 f/2.0
Volleyball: 85 f/1.8 for sideline and or backline shooting locations; 70-200 f/2.8 for up in bleachers or balcony.
