Alas, no 20D support.

OTOH, check this out. It supports a new public, archival format called DNG (Digital Negative). The free converter can translate from proprietary RAW formats. Sounds great! This should alleviate what ought to be a concern in the back of everyone's mind: How can I insure that my archived images can be interpreted by software in the distant future? Adobe's answer is DNG!

I wonder if camera manufacturers will embrace this format?

Yes it does support 20D, its just not official yet. It can open and convert the files.

Neil,

You talking to yourself? :D

BTW, I tried the DNG converter and I really like it. It has lossless compressions which yields a file about 20% smaller then the ones from my 20D. Hope it catches on and I can make a commitment to storing my files in this format. I am afraid to do so just yet.

But it might just be an option to use for archiving if they are compressed to 4/5 then that would be significant if You have many cd's with photos. So even if Adobe would be the only company to use and develop this format it could be usefull as long as the DNG utility is kept updated with the different formats.

I haven't downloaded it yet but can it batch convert the files or is it one by one conversion?

Tommy,

You may be right about that. Yes, it does batch conversion and it is very fast at doing so. I really like it.

Hmmm, I couldn't reach Adobe's website this afternoon and now it's evening here and it still doesn't work. The whole world must be downloading the update at the same time... well, I'll try again tomorrow.... :?

Downloaded ACR 2.3 and can do conversions, but don't get thumbnails of the raw files in browser (fortunately shot jpgs also). Did I have an intallation problem, or is everyone else missing the thumbnails?

All as before, thumbnails - the works.

I like the idea of having a standard. I'm a little skeptical, I'm paranoid of losing one pixel though, lol. I did do a couple conversions (the xmp file seemed to patch right back up with the new converted file which is great). I'm not convinced though. I tried a few examples and at 100% crop I could tell a difference...not sure yet a better or worse difference but a difference. It might have been that the settings in the xmp file I had already set my react differently to this format, I don't know but it makes me not want to use it until I know for sure what is going on here. But still, cool.

I'm looking forward for 20D support in C1. According to their web site, this should be available in November, in the next update to C1 Pro, SE & LE. :)

I can't use this utility on my Mac with OS X? I have Photoshop CS for my Mac but it seems this utility is only for Windows machines, am I right? Aggh!!

It works fine for Mac.

Adobe have one download page for Mac and one for windows.

You'll find it.

Curious, how do the Adobe 20D conversions compare to the standard Canon Raw software (ie, color, noise, etc).
When I used to use C1 Pro for the 300D, I wasn't a fan of the colour accuracy and noise produced by the Adobe Camera Raw.

I'd like to know other people's opinions, too.
Personally I like the Adobe as I am used to it
and don't have the patience to try anything else.

For the time being I am very pleased with the PS/ 20D Raw conversion.
