I'm just curious if you can do 'decent' macro shots of bugs and flowers with the 50MM? i tried a few and if i get too close to my subject, a 9 start blinking in my screen and i can't shoot... does it help to switch on the macro mode on my xti?

sorry for the dumb question.

Don't touch the macro mode on the camera it doesn't really do much- If you are shooting in natural light use Tv or Av modes. Not sure how close that lens focuses but it won't get near true macro. As commented above you would need a set of extension tubes to do that (Kenko set are good). They enable you to focus much closer and will give you over 1:1 magnification with that lens but the focus distance will be around 2" in front of the lens.

Not true macro, but close enough for flower shot. Here is an example in low light at f/2 with an 100% crop.
