...what upgrades/features do you think it will have?
Some of my guesses:
1) Flash
2) Faster fps
3) Live view
4) Freely rotating LCD
5) More resolution

Not likely to have flash, the pentaprism for full frame cameras are bigger, eliminating the space for flash. What is freely rotating LCD?

It's where the LCD screen is semi-detached from the camera body and can rotate in different directions.

Vari-Angle LCD Monitor

The screen conveniently flips out, allowing the user to adjust viewing angle over a wide range.
Photographers can tilt the LCD up or down to minimize annoying reflections or compose at unusual shooting angles.
It can even be rotated to face forward for perfectly framed self-portraits.

Ohh.. that's what I thought the OP meant. Most likely the 5D successor won't have this feature.

Canon has to stay competive. If they include "Live View", they may up the ante with "Vari-Angle" as well.

It's a nice feature, but I feel it would be turning my SLR into a large P&S. And if I had to pay more because of this stupid thing I'd be mad.
Aniwho...I'm just waiting it out. Live View sure and pretty much just even better noise levels! There's not much I expect or need. The 5D as is is quite amazing. I wouldn't mind the Rebel turned into a large P&S though.

Man, I hate the time right before PMA and Photokina. Everyone guessing, guessing, guessing. :) I know it's fun, but it's not going to get you anywhere, since Canon is very tight lipped until they actually issue a press release.

Why is there a consensus that there will be no flash? Is it because Canon presumes that 5D buyers will buy dedicated flashes?

As was stated above, the pentaprism on a FF camera leaves little to no room for a pop up flash...
And FWIW, IMO, there's no need for a built-in flash at the either the prosumer or pro levels. Folks either have Speedlights or they are into other forms of strobism.

It will be funny if it isnt a 5d replacement and I will be even happier I bought my 5d when i did :)

I REALLY hope they don't do this. Live View isn't that cool...

My Elan 7NE has a pop-up flash, and a pentaprism (and eye control focus!). :) FWIW I don't think they'll include a pop up flash.
1-series type weather sealing would really do it for me though, but it would also remove any lust I have for a 1-series body, so Canon probably won't do that either.

I don't understand why you would want a pop up flash on a 5D or its successor.
1) you can't use the (sometimes) smaller EF-S lenses which don't block the output of the pop up flash and create a quite bad shadow on the bottom of the frame.
2) and this relates to (1), most people will use L lenses on a 5D or full frame camera because they really make lenses show up their 'blemishes' and (most) L lenses are larger in front diameter than lenses such as the 18-55, 55-200 etc. L lenses are provided with a hood and nearly everyone will use that hood for protection. If you hook up a 16-35mm 2.8L II with it's hood onto a 5D, look from the front and see if a pop up flash would be obstructed when you are shooting at 16mm.
Also, there is so much more that you can do with a hot shoe flash (bounce, wireless etc.). From what I can see, a pop up flash would be almost useless on a 5D or its successor. I say almost because if you were in a situation where it didn't matter the quality and you needed to light the scene somehow, you may then turn to the pop up flash.
As soon as I started using the 580ex II on my 30D there was a noticeable difference in everything that the pop up flash was previously relied upon for. I'm sure that there are many people here that share my view regarding pop up vs. hot shoe.
For situation where you NEED light of some sort, the pop up flash can be ok, but otherwise I'd be turning to my 580ex II. :)
sorry if that was a bit long, but I don't see canon bringing out the 5D successor with a pop up flash; even if nikon does include it on all their cameras... ;)
Also the idea a flip out screen would, like _aravena said, make my camera seem like a P&S. I think Sony is looking into putting the flip out screen on one of their prosumer DSLRs or even their pro one, can't remember exactly.
Bring on the 7D (40D + full frame YAY) in feb and a stunning 3D at photokina! :)
all the best,
Nelson

The only reason why I love a small popup flash:
If you shoot outdoors a portraiture from a rather close distance, e.g. 2-3m, the flash is strong enough to produce some nice highlights in the eyes. It almost always isn't up for the job to lighten the shadows, but fold-able reflectors are a nice treat for that.
Does this make sense ? I don't carry a 580EX around with me all the time ...
Best regards!

I carry my 430 with me all the time. I've only used the pop up flash once with my 20D and even then I ended up putting on my 430EX.

Um, wasnt there plenty of room on the old film rebels that had pentaprism full frame viewfinders for pop up flash?

What I was trying to say is that with a wider lens + hood the pop up flash would create a shadow in the bottom of the frame. In fact with even some longer lenses + hood a shadow can be seen.

Just so no one gets the wrong notion, EF-S lenses can't be used on the 5D anyway.

But there's no reason EF-S lenses couldn't be mounted on FF, especially if they were to implement a high speed crop mode. See Nikon.

Only if they modified the mirror box so that the reflex mirror didn't slam into the rear lens element as it swung up during the shutter release.

split the mirror in two. or have it slide down. or have an "extension tube" type option.
there is no technological reason.
