View Full Version : CANON 20D framing problem...

is it mine only or does other 20D owners have the same problem?
WHAT I SEE IN THE VIEWFINDER IS NOT WHAT I SEE IN THE LCD DURING PLAYBACK AND ALSO DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I SEE ON THE COMPUTER.
in the lcd, the picture shows a lot more on the left side from my framing in the viewfinder and a little bit more on the bottom and top but the right side of the framing is just perfect match from the viewfinder framing.
however, viewing the picture in the computer all sides shows proportional wider framing from the viewfinder. just proving its not 100% viewing on its viewfinder...this i can live with although coming from 10D this is soooo sad!
but the unusual cropping of the image in the cams built in LCD during playback is just not right. basically in the LCD, it doesnt show the full right side of the captured image. its very annoying...
i can't compare it with anyone here in the city where i live coz its not being sold here yet. got mine thru FEDEX.
any feedback would be appreciated...
maybe what i got is a lemon and i should have it replaced.

Practically no SLRs, film or digital, have 100.0% correspondence between viewfinder and image. Canon USA says, on the EOS 20D specifications page of their website Coverage Approx. 95% vertically and horizontally (Coverage against JPEG Large)
They say the same thing about viewfinder coverage on the 10D.

Are you sure you are not partially zoomed in on the LCD? I have not experienced this with my 20D. Like stated above, they are bound to be a bit off but yours sounds like a bit much.

yes i can live with the 95% coverage, but what im complaining about and wondering if its the same with other 20D users is that issue with the LCD playback of the image were only the right side of the image is cropped out...
the unusual cropping is so evident during playback...
although in other DSLR we have that coverage inconsistency with viewfinder and image captured, playback on its LCD usually gives 100% view of the image if not very close to it and at least its center crop not sideview more on the left like what im experiencing:(

i am sure im not zoomed in...i tested it so many times already...
checked everything on the manual... refered to other canon users in my city...none could correct it:(
yes its very evident on the left and right side of the lcd...
i hope they will replace my unit not just trying to repairing it:(

My 10D and MKII both have this. I just learnt to live with it knowing that I was getting more on the lcd than what I saw in my viewfinder.

i have both this above mentioned cams and it doesnt crop the photo during playback on the lcd. or at least it displays the image centered off in the frame.
my experience in the 20D is the photo is crop full left of the captured image and the full right side is not displayed... its not balanced at all during preview....
anyone here experenceing the cropping on the lcd playback?

Interesting you should say that.
I came across the same problem when using my 10D. I line the pic up so it looks perfectly level, but it clearly isn't.
I put a shoe moundet spirit level on the camera, and all the images are level.
Do you close the other eye when looking through the viewfinder? Thr not to as I cured my problem with a change of technique - it seems your brain is not quite so good at deciding what is level with one eye closed.
