Just wondering how you guys go about it? Do you send copies in there original file size or do you resize & compress before sending? If this is the case is it possible to do a 'batch' resize or compression?

Thanks for any advice.

I have Namo Webeditor 6 which will upload, but it's pretty bad at that.
I now use WS_FTP (free version) to upload to my www.lunarpages.com (hoster) site. It's FTP and pretty good.

To upload a batch of files I just put them in one directory on my pc, then upload the whole directory in one go.

Since my website is being built bits and pieces I find WS_FTP very useful.

I use SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/). I have tried WS_FTP and CuteFTP but I didn't really dig those. SmartFTP is free and fantastically easy to use.

If a knitwit like me can use it, anyone can.

Smart FTP? I am downloading it now and will try it. I only use WS_FTP because I have been using it for many years. But using files on the PC is annoying, because my version has no "browse" to find stuff on PC.

I always resize & compress before sending. PS & some ? other pgms will batch process.

Take a look at Jalbum. (http://jalbum.net/) It will generate thumbnails, build your webpages and link to either the original files or resized copies, then upload to the host server for you. Just point it to the directory where your files are located and choose an output directory. Very easy to use. And it's free. Although the author does take donations. Lots of differerent page designs included and others can be downloaded.

I resize the photos on my computer first. Then I send them to fotopic.net by FTP, I log in on my maintenance page at fotopic.net and create a new collection with the photos I've just uploaded.

It's not a good idea to upload the original size photos, especially if they're very large - you'll be waiting an unnecessary long time to upload large files, which would probably be resized by the hosting service anyway.

Take a look at Jalbum

D'oh! I use JAlbum to put samples on CD! It's a GREAT program!
Try the "Vertical" skin with the Black.css "Style" for a clean album that doesn't get between your work & the viewer.

I upload mine to my gallery and it resizes and creates thumbnails for me. I dont usually use an FTP program unless I am doing a batch upload to my site.
Usually I create a "Network Place" in XP and just click there and click on my site folder and go straight to the folder I want to upload something at. Drag and drop, done.
I dont compress my images any more than 10% IF that, it depends on the initial size of the image before I process it. Anymore than 10% and in most images you will start to see pixelation. 20% is usually safe as well, once again depending on the image.

I did not really care for SmartFTP. WS_FTP LE is what I have been using. It is tolerable.

I just downloaded WS_FTP Home trial. Perfect. Now I need $35!

resize...upload via ftp (smart ftp) and I host with http://www.eleven2.com for the storage space, since I like to maintain quality and a fairly viewable size photos...and the support is great when I do have a question.

the webserver uses cPanel which has a script called fantastico, it can install several different galleries for you to use on a website. I don't use it though, but thats just cause I took classes to learn xhtml/flash/php ect which I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do while in college...

I edit my photos, then do a batch resize to make my images 600px in the longest dimension with a file size usually between 50k and 100k. As was mentioned, many programs can do batch resizes... I use PS. I then upload them to my webhost (1and1.com) via ftp to my gallery (see my sig for link) which I wrote myself in php.

Some sites actually have batch utilites built into them for this. I use Smugmug.com which has several easy options for this for both PC and Mac. You can drag and drop into a browser window just like any windows function, or select a folder and it will scan for valid image file types for you to select from. They support batch loads of 100 meg at a time.
