HI all, my first post but I've been reading around here for a while, I'm just wondering if any of the remotes for the Digital Rebel can lock the shutter open, so I can just hit the button once to open it, then again to close it without having to hold a button down, wired or not doesn't matter much.

Thanks, and sorry if this is posted somewhere that I didn't notice.

There are 2 wireless remotes that work with the Rebel. The RC1 and RC5. You'll have to read up on them to be sure, but I believe the RC1 allows you to press once to open the shutter and again to close it. I know one of them does this and it seems like the older model is the one.

I believe mvs is correct about the RC1 remote, and the wired remote (Canon Remote Switch RS-60E3) definitely has the feature you desire.

the wired RS 60E3 remote has a sliding thingie that locks the shutter button down. I think it is well worth the $23

I have the RC1 remote and it allows you click once to open the shutter and click again to close it.

My Digital Rebel in bulb mode works that way with the RC-5. Push button once, open, again, and it closes.

I must be easily entertained, because I think that a wireless remote for the camera is one of the greates things I have for it gadget wise. :D

Do you have to be in front of the camera to use the wireless remotes?

The remote does. When I don't need to be infront of the lens, I just hold it out in front of the camera and hit the button. The timer is for 3 seconds so you hand insn't in the picture.

I've also found the remote can work well to the right (on my 300d anyway), you don't have to be in front of the camera to operate the shutter. I have my remote set to an instant response and I've been able to keep it far enough to the side that I've never caught my hand in the way.

I'll second the bulb setting. One remote click the shutter is open, another click and it closes. I kept mine open for 80 minutes like this once, worked quite well!

Cobra351, with 80 minute exposures, how long does the battery last?
Or for that matter, with a single battery, how many 1+ minute shots can you take (with the Drebel, that is)?

Hi, this was a while ago, so I'll do my best at remembering. The night I tried the 80 minute shot, well, I did that one and a few more (maybe 5-6 shots) between 5-20 minutes. As I recall I was able to review the shots (and many others) on the original battery (I started the evening with a full charge). It kind of surprised me how long that charge lasted, I was impressed. During normal shooting the battery will last me several hundred shots (maybe 30-50% with flash).

I should note this is all done using factory Canon batteries.

Hope this helps.
