I was wondering how some of you guys and gals got started in shooting sports?
I am a freelancer for a few local media outlets (a news paper/wireservice and a magazine). The editor at the paper has not allowed me to shoot any sporting events because he said that I don't have experience shooting sports. So last week I called up the college that I graduated from and spoke to the mens sports media director and asked him if I could have a press pass to one of the mens games so that I can expand my portfolio. The guy told me sure and that he was glad to talk to me and could give me one anytime I want. I attended the game last night and had no porblems during the girls game or the first half of the guys game.
Before the second half of the guys game the girls media director came up to me and told me that I had no reason to be on the floor. I showed her my press pass and explained myself to her and she let me stay. She then told me that I was not able to use the pictures for anything including my portfolio. Is this true? My understanding is that if I wanted to (which I dont) that I could still send them into the wire service and use them as portfolio shots.
Any help would be appreciated.
I would also like to know how you all got started shooting sports.
