:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

what programs do you guys use to edit your photos

we are looking at lightroom and photoshop cs3 but are told they are not user friendly for the novice photgrapher.

someone suggested paintshop pro. someone else suggested photoshop elements. looking for something thats user friendly for enhancing and editing.

any others ??

what do you guys ??

I would suggest Elements. Costco will have it for $49 next week. This should also be on another forum.

do a google search for irfanview. it's a free program and it's what i began with and still use for some things.

LR isn't too bad to learn either.

i had it on the raw forum and didnt get much response.

the paintshop pro version looks ok but im wondering just how hard cs3 and lightroom really are. ELEMENTS looks like its geared toward the casual shooter. lightroom and cce dont look very difficult from the demonstration videos,,,but the guy demonstrating it knows what the heck he is doing:o

i do most of my editing in LR. i resize and sharpen in CS3, mostly. i don't use CS3 to anywhere near its potential.

my suggestion is to start with LR. actually LR + elements is all i really need.

CS3 is much too powerful a program if you're only doing the simple color correction, brightness and contrast stuff and sharpening that most novices do. Elements or Lightroom should be fine.

LR gives you the option of transferring a copy of a file to another program. LR and elements are both adobe products.

if you in fact find that elements is toooo easy you won't have a problem with any of the programs that you've mentioned :D.

again, i suggest you start with lightroom and then assess your needs once you are comfortable with the program.

check out the album in my signature. 98% of the processing was done in LR. i just sized and sharpened in CS3...which i could have also done in elements.

I say get LR and elements, and if you find you need cs3 later on, have your kid buy it w/ a student discount ;)

I use Photofiltre for many of the more basic tasks - it's fast, free and fairly powerful. And just to keep up the aliteration, it's French, but there is an English version available.

http://photofiltre.free.fr/download_en.htm

It can also be made portable if you want to use it from a USB memory stick.

Also, don't forget about another freebie - Picasa. Not my cup of tea, but some people seem to like it.
