i'm working on a website for my photos and I have a question about getting it listed on google (and other search engines for that matter). after a brief search on google, it looks like their crawlers will eventually find my website (or maybe not). Is there a way to let google know that I now exist, or do I just wait for them to find me?

thanks for any help.

http://www.google.com/addurl/

Doesn't mean that your site will be indexed anytime soon though, but eventually it should, be sure to get some links on other sites back to your site too.

You actually have to pay something too in order to get up in the list for general listings. Saw something on this.

ryan, the google ad URL that mr_e mentioned is a good start.
And yes, linking to other sites and getting them to link to yours will help in the ranking.

For my clients, I use http://www.dmoz.org/add.html
Category is very important and keywords in your website will also help.
You don't necessarily have to pay anyone to do this for you.
You can do it on your own but requires a lot of time and research.
With dmoz, I got and still get one clients website the top hit on Google and several other search engines.
Though the item is unique that is still a major accomplishment.
With Yahoo though, the same site is listed as #17, but that is still the second page.
And guess what, I didn't even register that site on Yahoo's directory at that time.
But here is theirs
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/dir/suggest/suggest-01.html

FYI: One of the websites that I maintain....checking out my viewers data. The top-two search engines (obviously) Google=73.21%, Yahoo=18.62%

I have not done enough research but I think if you go with the pay services, you are just paying them to do exactly what I did for free with registering with those two directories.

Goodluck!

Let me see if I can give you a hand here. Please be patient with me, I'm by far not a technical writer. And hopefully I wont only confuse you all even more. :lol:

There are literally thousands of web site with information about how to optimize your own web site, but like in most cases, you need to know what you are looking for.

The first thing you have to do on your web site is SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The way you make your site Optimized is by telling the search engines first, what your site is about. You do this with your sites META tags, site TITLE, and the site DESCRIPTION.

I'll break down a META TAG section which is located at the top of every page on your web site (or should be). If it's not, then that's probably the biggest reason why you are not being listed on search engines.

Lets assume I have a web site DigitalDawn_Photography.com and I am a photographer. My specialty is Landscape Photography, yet I also do other things like weddings, events, wildlife, etc. Below is an example of how my META Tags would look. The most important thing to notice is that I am using words in the order of importance through-out the entire thing. These are called KEYWORDS.

<head>
<title>Photography by DigitalDawn @ DigitalDawn_Photography.com</title>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1">
<META Name="title" Content="Landscape Photography, Wildlife Photography, Weddings and Event Photography by DigitalDawn">
<META Name="keywords" Content="Lanscape Photographer, Lanscape Photography, Wildlife Photographer, Wedding Photographer, Events Photogrpher, Photographer in NE Georgia">
<META Name="description" Content="Lanscape Photographer, Wedding Photographer, Wildlife Photographer, Events Photographer and much more.">
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
<meta name="distribution" content="global">
<META Name="Classification" CONTENT="Content">
<META Name="alias" content="Photographer DigitalDawn">
<META Name="revisit-after" content="5 days">
<META Name="resource-type" content="document">
<META Name="rating" content="General">
<META Name="copyright" content="DigitalDawn.com">
<META Name="author" content="Dawn Burgess">
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/css/main.css">
</head>

The META tags should be in the top of each of your web pages. The above would be a typical META tag section for a front page, but some things should be adjusted to correspond to the page being viewed. If a user is on a page called Wedding Photography, then the KEYWORD for this page should be Wedding Photographer or Photography, etc. etc.

Now, when consider all what words you want to use as your KEYWORDS, consider this information below. In the last 30 days, the following terms were searched for XXXX amount of times on the Ovature Servers (Yahoo).

The next thing that matters is links out and in. You want to have some link exchanges from other simular sites. Preferably a well established, older, popular site with a good Page Rank. You can check a sites PR at various sites which offer a tool to check it for you.

Hint: Post your web address on Myspace.com in photography groups (DONT SPAM). The links are useless in comments, or on the profile itself because it is replaced with a MSLINK redirect, so this is useless. Myspace has a PR (page rank) of 7, which is very good. This gives your site weight.

Your link code matters. If you are linking someone to your web site, or providing another site with the code you want used for a link exchange... Using the same Example Photogrpher Web Site above, my link would look something like this.

<a href="http://www.digitaldawn_photography.com">Photographer DigitalDawn</a>

Network with other photographers and exchange links with them. Don't be afraid to use the CONTACT US for contacting a web site owner to request a link exchange. I cant tell you how many requests I get a day for link exchanges on some of my sites. :lol: I am however picky about who I will exchange links with, and if I were you, I would follow the same rule for your site.

Forums don't really want to hear this.

Because links IN matter (amount and importance) you really should use your technical documentation to your advantage. If you post technical documentation on your web site, you will rank better on the search engines because you will have tons of TEXT for the spiders to key off of. The spiders love text, and sites with text rank better than site with just images.

Not to mention, at this point you should possibly consider no longer giving away your skills, education, amd knowledge for free. Next time consider providing forum users with a link to the documentation which is located on your site.

Search engines will give your site more weight for this little effort. But I am telling you, don;t spam, its not worth it, it hurts you far more then it could have ever helped you.
