There is a large, audible sucking noise as tens of thousands of people gasp in unison.

If you have ever been to B&H, you probably have a pretty good idea why they are closed. Sept. 29th Sunset, 2004 marks the beginning of the Sukkot - an important Jewish festival. It lasts 7 days and is followed by 2 other holy days.

Actually I sighed in relief. I won't be ordering anything for two weeks. My bank account it safe.

Forced to quit cold turkey....

Yep.. it'll show in the bank account as a good thing.. maybe even help out with the addiction as a whole (maybe not)

I admit that I have a problem.. ...for now we'll take things one day at a time.

Mornings will be the toughest.. Two weeks of waking up to the sound of a doctor yelling "clear!"

... then I'll sit down in front of the PC for twenty minutes or so... then maybe I'll turn it on...

Coffee... in vast iced tanks will be next.. an I.V. for best results.

That and the forum... yep.. our own little Canon Addiction Anonymous support group.

FWIW. I'm waiting for the second B&H shipment of the day to be brought by UPS. The first one arrived a couple hours ago. The second one is due later this afternoon.

I'm not Jewish, but I do track Jewish holidays just for times like this.

Wouldn't that mean Adorama, Onecall, and many others? Are there any non-Jewish camera retailers that will be able to ship 20D's during this time? I have my order in with Dell but would like an alternative for accessories and such.

Think of this as God giving you time to decide, do I buy the 20D and not pay the electric bill or rent. He is giving you time to make alternative living arrangments before the gear is purchased. :P

Yeah, a lot of the bigs ones will be closed for a while, especially here in the NYC area. The best I've found in the area that is open during these holidays is Unique Photo (http://www.uniquephoto.com) in Florham Park, NJ. They seem to have the same prices as B&H for the most part too.

I just got my order in with B&H about an hour before their holiday cutoff for non-rush shipments. (Belmondo, this 300mm F/4L IS better be white)

Don't worry. It will be close enough to white that you won't be disappointed. It's a great lens, and you will appreciate the IS.

No. Loss. B&H ain't the only game in town. I have also used www.adorama.com for YEARS. They match B&H service no problem.

I have recently used onecall.com & have been very pleased with the service. I had to return one item - no problems.

You may want to give them a shot - their service so far has been excellent.

What is it with me and B&H? I finally got the money together for a new lens and now they're shut... I think I'm gonna cry...

EDIT:
btw. has Canon stopped making the BG-ED3? I couldn't find it on their website.

I think it's just an update/refresh issue. It shows up on the Flash Product tour. Canon's sites have been going through major overhauling lately. Plenty available from the e-tailers.

17th Street Photo is open, despite the Holiday. Generally good outfit; however, I would be careful to double-check their return policy. The web site indicates you can return digital stuff within seven days for any reason, no restocking fee (or at least it doesn't say there is one). When I visited the showroom and inquired about a Mark II the guy said EXPLICITLY there were NO returns.

Sometmes I have to ramble somewhere and burying it at the bottom of this post seems about right...

I finally got to the holy land of photography this past Sunday, yes that's right I visited BH in person at the store.

Wwwaaaayyy too many people. But except for the camera/lens department, everyone was extremely helpful, if a bit brisk. The camera department was the only place I kind of felt uncomfortable asking questions in. The redhead who helped me in audio though was very helpful, even though I did not get what I had come for there. The older gentleman in the film/enlarger area was also very friendly and helpful. good service also in video and used departments but nothing out of ordinary for Virginia. Oh yeah, parking was easy (of course I arrived at 8:30am on Sunday, before they were open). Just the camera dept. was dissapointing (although I bought almost as much stuff there as video).

I bought one thing not on my list to buy (although it was on the list to look) and forgot to buy one thing that was on my list. I now have a selkonic 558 light meter (now I just need to figure out what all the buttons are for :)
and I still have to get better audio mike for my XL2 (at least I now know what to get)

I also got the 3x wide lens for my XL2 and a Portabrace carry bag for same, which was main reason for visit. Add in a step ring (72mm lens to 77mm filter), 1GB card (on sale - also not on list to buy there, but I had planned on getting somewhere), 72mm UV filter and a new Bogen tripod, ball head, and spare plate (one for each camera for once). I now can change the batteries with out taking off the base plate.

And they were nice enough to ship it for a modest fee rather then make me pay sales tax (which was a lot, as in enough for another lens or CF card or tripod (actually a tripod, CF card and lens combined) did I mention the sales taxes are high in NY. glad I live in Virginia (at least I am glad now, if I wasn't before)

and on a final note, timing was perfect, I arrived home from the airport (after the business meeting in NY) about 20 feet behind the UPS truck.

and I am being literal with the 20 feet from the turn onto my street. He stopped and I pulled into driveway at same time.

This is another of my rambling have to get it out of my system posts with people who may understand my excitment with new toys posts. thank you for your patience.

And remember, they are closed on the Sabbath Saturday, as are 95% of the photography stores in and around 34-36th streets in Manhattan. Most of them are owned by Jewish folks. I've been to New York too many times and stood in front of the B&H store going "Oh Sh*t" on a Saturday afternoon. But they are open and kicking on Sundays!
