It's out! Check out Richard Franiec's newly designed cable release for the G7/9!

Custom Mechanical Cable Release Adapter

The adapter is made from the same material as the CHSC for it's ideal properties for the application.

It is simple snap on/off device securely staying in place when put in, and easy to remove as well.

I have received many mails from people interesting in macro, panorama and astro photography with "G" cameras to create something helpful.

Well this is my answer to their prayers. Adapter will be offered without the cable because many people have older ones from the film era.

Also, this will allow to use individually preferred lengths.

Can't believe there have been no replies on this.

At any rate - I wonder if you can still zoom with this attached.

Would also be interested to hear user reviews (I know its new). Since its a mechanical release pushing the actual button as a finger would, what benefit is there beyond just carefully pushing the button with a finger?

I received mine today. This is a very simple idea and elegantly accomplished. Looks very nice, very well made. Snaps on and off just as it should. Zoom works fine.

I just don't have a cable with me to test it! More later tonight.

I just use the two second delay when doing landscapes... I am trying not to add anything... keeps my tiny camera bag tiny..

Like Gordon, I have my adapter but no cable yet. I will say that it fits perfectly and is easy to install after you've done it once. Removing is even easier. And yes, zoom works perfectly. In fact, its even easier to zoom with the adapter as the zoom lever is a bit larger. Overall, yet another excellently made product by Richard. I'll update once I get my cable.

I found my old cable and my G9 cable release adapter works great! With a little practice, I can even do the half-press to check exposure, focus, etc.

I'll play with it a bit more and then write this up in my blog.

Hmm interesting. I wonder if it comes with the cable if we don't have one.

It comes with no cable. You have to supply your own cable release. This is adapter only. That is direct from Richard via email.

What are photographers shooting with G9 that requires a cable release?

I need to find a good place for the cable. Any suggestions? Other than calumet?

If you're looking for one in the same general price range as the Calumet cable ($15 or so), I'd go with a Habuka cable. It looks much the same but the Hakuba cable is much smoother than the Calumet cable. I had the Hakuba but it didn't work on Richard's adapter at first (so I returned the Kabuka and got the Calumet cable). Richard has now fixed the problem and the Habuka cable now works fine with his adapter. I'll keep the Calumet cable as it works fine for me.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb200/palousegirl/IMG_0976-1.jpgI love the G9 for macro work and often use a tripod, I'll do long exposures using the 2 second or 10 second timer shutter release but would rather have a cable release. It's a good idea. This is the first character of a signature (Kanji) on a Japanese Gyuto (chef's knife) shot with the G9 and I used this method.

The advantage is being able to expose when you want and not wait for the two or ten second delay of the timed shutter release. There is also reported finer control over the zoom ring.

It might be heresy but a Nikon AR-3 cable release works perfectly and is smoother than silk.

I've found releases on eBay, ranging in length from 9-24 inches for the cable type and 6 ft. to 20 ft. for the air cable releases. I even bought a 12 inch release for $10 at my local camera shop. The owner said he hadn't sold one in years, and the one I bought was the last one.

The problem with a mechanical shutter release is that it still pushes the button therefore still moves the camera ever so slightly.

I use the custom timer set to 1 second when I have my G9 on a tripod. I have no need for a mechanical release.

There is as USB controller for the G9. Actually there are several. I own two types. I do Aerial photography with the G9 and an A640.
Now.... USB control is limited to what you can get hooked up to your PC IE) no RAW or MF or continuous shooting to start. There are a few extras I get such as Open/Close lens for takeoff/landing.
I acted as a beta-tester for this ----> .http://vp-systems.eu/camremote_new.html
This device is quite flexible. It will work with MANY Canon P&S's.
It will operate from directly from a Radio Control receiver's servo output OR SWITCHES for shutter and zoom and Open/close etc.
It can be set to interval shooting and more.
