got new digital rebel for newspaper class

Yay! After a month of sitting in class and doing nothing much, the photo editor finally showed me the new digital rebel that we have there. Of course, I had read online and everything and knew more than her or the teacher about it (they had it on the green box..) and now I have it at home with me because I'm going to shoot a basketball game and the swim team tonight. Leave any tips if you want to, for either sports or using the rebel and I'll check them before I leave. We have the kit lens, canon 75-300 4-5.6 (ugh slow) and my 420ex. I'm excited (understatement).

get the hack and push your iso to H (3200)...........that lens will not be fast enough for those applications........

..........and............the hack will give you FEC..........something the 420 EX does not have.

and while they're at it, maybe they can give you a 50 f1.8 for 70 bucks.....this will give you a nice indoor lens to take a good pic of the winners.

Yeah I know, these lenses are really too slow for it. I'll ask for the 50 again tomorrow (tried to explain why we needed it today but no one knew what I was talking about :roll:) Unless I can install the hack to my g3's cf card and put that in the rebel and install it, I can't do it. The software for the rebel isn't installed on my computer. Or can I download it?

You can update the ZB and other software from your G3's disc to the current versions, which the DR uses. They're out at the Canon USA web site. And, yes you can install the hack on your G3's card (but be careful about the frame numbering on both cameras if you do this - putting a used card from one camera can reset the frame numbering on another).

How do I get the firmware file on the cf card? I don't have a card reader, windows xp doesn't let me upload files to it viewing it as a folder, and zoombrowser only lets me upload images.

I don't have time to get a card reader, and if I try to transfer it to the wrong camera it tells me that the firmware isn't intended for that camera and shuts down. Oh yeah, I updated zoombrowser and it still doesn't see the rebel.

Awesome. I just got back, and it was an awesome learning experience. I got to get right in the action. I got to show other people how to use their cameras. I got to see how it feels to miss the perfect shot, by waiting for the autofocus or by having my flash off. It was so much fun that I can't begin to describe it here. I also screwed up some swimmers who jumped in early by shooting my flash too early like three times. :oops:

Anyway, there were some other people shooting with me. First at the swim meet there was a lady who also had a digital rebel. She had it on that evil green box and I quickly got her to switch to Tv mode and to bump up the iso. This was after I saw her cupping her hand over the flash to keep it from firing in no-flash events. :roll: She said she was looking for a flash and I helped her out. Then the videographers from the broadcasting class came down and I talked with them, then we moved on to basketball. It was so funny when one of them accidentally turned the nd filter on and I explained what it did and they had no clue what I was saying. They were surprized how much I knew about cameras, and it actually helped. I was shooting like a pro. Now I have to go through my pictures and see if I got anything really good. I might post some.

That zoom lens was way too slow for basketball, just like I thought. Almost all of the pictures taken with that had to turn out blurry and at iso1600.

If you d/l the latest Digital Rebel (Canon) firmware, it contains a utility "Upload Firmware" which will let you transfer a firmware update to the DR CF card via the camera's USB connection. This way you'll also have a copy of the "official" Canon firmware to put back when everyone else finds the hack too confusing.
