Does it make any sense to use an external flash in manual mode when the camera is in Tv mode?

The reason I ask is that when I do this with my D-Rebel and 550EX, it causes the camera to blink the minimum lens aperature (indicating overexposure). At first I thought something was wrong with the camera, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that maybe the camera is right in thinking that there is a problem. The camera knows that if the flash output is fixed and it is forced to choose an aperature for me (in Tv mode), it's most likely going to be wrong, so it's letting me know (in a strange way... why overexposure?). If this is the case, though, I would think it would be documented, and I haven't been able to find anything in my manuals or online.

Does anyone know if this is the case? If not, would someone who owns a 550EX mind putting it in manal mode and the camera in Tv mode and see what happens? Thanks a lot in either case. Not knowing for certain if something is wrong, I can't seem to put this to rest.

Thanks again!

I don't think there is any exposure communication at all from 550 to the camera when 550 is in M mode. Mark II goes into f22 on 50/1.4 when it is in Tv and 550 in M. That is just the camera's way of saying you are have wrong combination of settings between devices.

Pekka,

Great, thanks a lot for the confirmation. That makes complete sense.

If you have your flash set to manual then you must set your exposure manually.
