I don't want to sound too stupid, but I brought home a new BG-ED3 Battery grip, installed it my camera, and the buttons don't work ? Is there something I have to do in the setup of the camera to enable the buttons on the grip ?

This may be a silly question, but have you switched the BG-ED3 on? There is a little slide switch on the front - ready for a finger to move - that enables / disables the controls on the grip. Disabling it is handy when you want to avoid accidentally using the grip's controls.

With the camera lens facing you, note the small on/off switch on the inner left side of the BG_ED3. Make sure the switch is on with the red dot showing

No problem; when I got my BG-ED3, I rushed to try it without reading anything and believed that it was faulty!

 I did the same thing when I got mine. I guess in the excitement of recieving the grip, I lost a little common sense.

Make that . . . never hurts. Some manuals aren't much help.

... didn't get a manual with mine. I bought it used. Thanks for the advice though.

I didn't make that mistake. I knew all about the BG-ED3. That's because when I ordered the 10D and lenses... the grip came 3 weeks before anything else. It was all I had for all that time  I would occasionally get it out of its little box and press the buttons...

In fact the 10D was the last bit to arrive. I had three lenses, a grip, spare batteries, filters, bags... you name it. Only no camera :(

When you're not going use the veritcal shutter, TURN IT OFF. I always seem to bump the dial one way or another. Then, when I'm NOT paying attention, I have an unusual shutter speed that normally doesn't work with what I'm shooting.

Good luck
