From 420Ex to 580EXII ?

I have 10D with 420Ex and I just moved to 40D.. would I benefit from upgrading my flash to 580 EXII?

Main use: Travel, kids, family, school, sports

IF the 420 is doing the job for you I'd say no. If you want more control of the flash and/or more range then yes you will gain from the 580. With it you can shoot manual on and off camera setting the power as needed, with the pc socket you can use Pocket Wizards or even a pc cable to trigger the flash. Adding the 580 you can make it the master and using the 420 off camera as a slave. the 580 has enough power to mount it (if you dare) off camera in a gym to shoot sports.
