Incidentally I've just noticed that you can see a flaw on the image - there's a vertical line running right down alongside the spire of the building. This is a scan from film, and apparently there must have been a bit of dust or grit in the film canister to scratch the negative like that. Hooray for digital!

Argh! DOH: Las Vegas (NYNY Hotel)DING DING!
Yes, it's the New York New York hotel/casino in Las Vegas. I tried very hard to find an angle where it looked like a "real" city skyline. The perspective is all wrong, of course; the "skyscrapers" are only around 100-200 feet tall, rather than the 500+ feet they are pretending to be. And unfortunately it's still possible to see parts of the roller-coaster track between the trees. But all in all I was quite pleased with it.
Your turn, Ken.

I would assume that someone well-known lives here - is that correct? Is it in London? Is this a government department or headquarters? No, neither. Number 28 is a residential address, as are the houses either side of it, and indeed most of the properties in this street. Was this address depicted in a movie released around that time? No. There would be no reason for that.
Roy Mathers
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 08:21

Why therefore would there be any likelihood of reporters wishing to visit an unknown?
StewartR
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 08:49
Was last May those bomb scares?I can't remember. To be honest, working in central London for 20 years means you're pretty inured to bomb scares. We had loads of them (and not all just scares) courtesy of the IRA in the late 80s and early 90s - at the time I worked in an office that was above a major rail station, so we were frequently evacuated! Then more in the late 90s (IRA again) and now more in the 00s (but not the IRA). They all tend to blur together. I couldn't even remember when the big Canary Wharf bomb was without looking it up just now.
But anyway, this WAIN is nothing to do with bomb scares.

Maybe a famous person never actually lived there, but a news worthy event happened there.
StewartR
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 08:54
Would this residence have been featured in the national news?Hmmm. Number 28 has almost certainly been seen on the news. However, I don't think it would be fair to say it has been featured. More like being a bit of accidental background in a news story that's about something (or somewhere) else.

StewartR
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 08:58
I'm thinking the address is similar to that of a notable event. Maybe an error in news reporting?Ingenious. I must admit I do not know precisely why the person who lives at number 28 put that sign up. Certainly he had legitimate reason to expect that he might get reporters knocking on the door. But I cannot say for certain whether he thought they might knock on his door by mistake, or whether he thought they might want to talk to him despite the fact that he is not famous. I suspect it might actually be the latter, and that he thought reporters might want to talk to him not because of who he is, but because of where he is.
EDIT: Thinking about it further, the second option must be right. There could be no possibility, at any time of day or night, of a reporter knocking at this address by mistake.
Maybe a famous person never actually lived there, but a news worthy event happened there. Not to my knowledge.

And in any case I've already told you that most of the properties in this street are residential. (Though not 100% residential: by a complete coincidence, the hotel my wife stayed in for the night before our wedding is also in this street! - we got married just around the corner from here.)

Well Downing St doesn't seem to go that far in numbers (unless the other side of the building)No, it doesn't. There are only 4 houses in Downing Street - numbers 9, 10, 11 and 12. Interestingly they are all alongside one another - many of the old-established parts of central London do not follow the usual convention of odd-numbered houses on one side and even-numbered on the other side.

StewartR
29th of January 2008 (Tue), 09:53
I have dropped a few more obscure clues in passing.
One is that the owner of the house put up the sign very hastily last May. How did I know that? Because I walk past it twice a day. I also couldn't help noticing the huge throng of reporters and armed policemen that were in the street that day, which is presumably what inspired the sign.
The reporters have since gone - mostly, though they come back from time to time - but the armed police are still here 24/365. (You'll have noted that I said there is no way a reporter could get the address wrong at any time of day or night. That's why.)
I also made a comment about house numbering practices. Just to make it clear, number 28's next-door neighbours are not 26 and 30.

Connaught Square, London?DING DING!
Tony Blair and his family have lived at 29 Connaught Square, which is next-door to number 28, since he resigned as Prime Minister. There is a 24-hour armed police presence at the front and the back, plus a whole load of parking spaces have been taken out of action outside the house, presumably to provide some sort of security buffer zone. I'm not sure all this is too popular with the other residents, and that's even before he does the home improvements (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=46340&in_page_id=34)!
You're up, Pete.

Brilliant Tom. I was racking my brains trying to work out which railway's logo that is, but surprisingly quite a lot of them (e.g. Bosnia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, ...) are generically quite similar. [Reference (http://www.uic.asso.fr/baseinfo/vademecum/vademecum.php).]
As it turns out, that's actually not the current Italian Railways logo on the station, so I was never going to get it like that!

This photograph was taken only last August, so either they have changed the logo in the meantime, or they are using an old one.

I don't think it's this one Monty - Tom's tower has supports under the walkway.

I don't think they are the same either, but I bet they are in the same general area.

Long Description:
The Limes Germanicus (Latin for Germanic frontier) was a remarkable line of frontier forts that bounded the ancient Roman provinces of Germania Superior and Raetia, and divided the Roman Empire and the unsubdued Germanic tribes, from the years 83 to 260. At its height, the limes stretched from near Bonn on the Rhine to near Regensburg on the Danube.
Watchtowers were constructed at intervals along the frontier. The watchtowers have all been given unique identifiers starting with the letters WP (Wachtposte in German) followed by a number series.
This tower was reconstructed by the town of Lorch in 1969 in the supposed location of Tower WP 12/14 although the location of this tower has never been firmly identified. It stands very near in the vacinity of the Lorch Cloister.
The entrance of the reconstructed tower, being at ground level, is an exception to the way these towers are known to have been constructed, with the entrance one story above ground level.
It's possible to enter the tower and climb the stairs to the stop without a key.
