You can crop and straighten at the same time in Lightroom.

As far as "rules" goes, "The Rule of Thirds" is often touted -- that is, have subject matter, horizon, etc. placed in a third quadrant of your image. However, to me, the "rule" is to crop and position your image in a way that "works" for you. The Rule Of Thirds may or may not work: that is your creative decisio!

Lightroom has great cropping and straightening tools,

Just click the Crop tool,

put your mouse right outside a corner and click and drag to rotate the image to align with a vertical or horizontal line

then release the button then click and drag to shrink to crop,

then click and drag in the image to position it relative to the crop.

Don't worry about the golden ratio. The rule of thirds is close enough to the golden ratio that that is what most people use. While the rule of thirds in percentage is 33%, or 66% the golden ratio is more like 38% and 62%. It's much easier to use the thirds but they are both targeting the same concept and used for the same reason.

It's one of those things in human nature that no one can seem to put any solid scientific evidence on but for some reason this ratio, or thirds, when used properly is much more pleasing to the human eye than any other ratio/combination for the most part (artisitcally speaking). One thing we do know is that this ratio happens in nature all over the place. it's the ratio of the upper arm bone to the lower arm bone, same with the leg, finger bones, toes, it occurs in flowers, tree branches, etc. We are surrounded by it everyday.

One other thing of note is that an odd number of items in a picture/painting is much more pleasing than an even number. Many theorize that this has to do with our human nature of wanting to pair up ourselves with another entity, and, if there are an even number of items that means we can't pair up with anything ourselves, we would be the 'third wheel' the odd man out.
