An experience to report.........
Am the proud new owner of the 70-200 mm 2.8 L lens. Did some shooting with it at an indoor water park this weekend, and noticed several series of "soft" photos. Was curious about why, in the sense that I figured it was me, not the equipment. After stewing on it for an hour, and eliminating some of the common culprits (wide aperture, slow shutter, is off) I thought to myself "Why don't I head to the camera shop?" I mean, I did my duty and bought from them instead of online for this very reason.
So I pack up my laptop and head down the road. Walking in, there are six salepeople mulling around, all of which I know by face, if not by name. I walk up to the counter, and am greeted by the salesperson who sold me the lens.
I explain that I am having some soft results with the lens he sold me, and needed input. He smiled and said, "sure, lets take a look".
So I open up DPP, and he says "What's this?" I said "DPP". He said, "Oh, the software that comes with a canon...... I use capture.".
Sensing his Nikon blood, I said, cordially.... "The software doesn't matter of course, but do you have someone here that shoots this lens alot? They might see something right off."
His reply -- "I don't think anyone here shoots canon anymore."
He asked, and sure enough, no one did -- although one of the guys offered me his EOS 3 for $500.
This is my world. And they are the only game in town.
PS -- I had the lens in IS mode 2. Problem solved........

I'm glad you found your problem. but no one shoots canon????? aren't there almost 100k people on this forum who use canon? lol. the things some people say. the ritz by my house is like that. they say canon is a dying company. and that's the reason they don't cary much in the way of canon gear. they also told me that the 40d has not been announced yet. that was just last week when I was looking for gels. lol

Ritz is the best. I was on the road last month, and needed some filters. Googled them, and found the nearest one.
It was in the middle of a Boscov's (like a macys and a Kohls mixed together.) A little kiosk. They had one 55mm uv filter.

Glad to hear it is alive and well..passed up buying Nikon gear for Canon. Hate to think I'd made a faux pas. Guess I better get some white lenses now..so much for my other hobbies.

30+ years ago I walked into a photo store and was told by the proprietor that Canon cameras were inferior to even the lowliest of Noinks. I walked out with a Canon FTb that is still functional. I've owned Canon gear exclusively since that time and have yet to be let down by my "inferior" gear.
I recently stopped by one of our local stores to snag a roll of film and overheard a salesman telling a lady that a Noink D40 was technologically superior to a Canon 1Dmk3. I am amazed by the number of folks that still try to perpetuate the myth that Noink products are somehow superior to Canon and that no "real" professional would use cheap Canon crap.

... Me thinks that the Nikon paint just may contain lead judging by the way the cameras owners act sometimes ...

Given the way that our local stores pump Nikon, I am firmly convinced that they are being spiffed, which is entirely legal, but not the best thing for the consumer.

Going by just the title of this thread, I keep waiting for a punchline. However, the subject matter leaves me thinking it's no joke...

No joke. Although I will say that they are helpful, just not well informed on the canon side of things.

A photographer walks into a camera store and the owner says:
"Why the long lens?" :)
