I was wondering how good the ballhead for this was. The main downside of the Zoom is the lack of ability to move the camera's pointing direction.

Since i'm not planning on using many big lenses (the biggest i'll probably get is the 17-55 IS) I'm debating between getting this gorillapod set (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/494521-REG/Joby__Gorillapod_SLR_Zoom_Mini_Tripod_with.html) and the normal SLR gorillapod for $30 less.

I bought one of these while I was in the process of deciding what tripod I wanted to get and let me tell you I never use the thing. Its kind of a pain to set up and really limits you on your shooting position ( either down on the ground or on a nearby fence or whatever). If your dead set on getting one the ballhead would probally help. One thing that it's nice for is roadside shooting from your car; just roll down you window part way, wrap the pod around the top of your door, and shoot.

If you want to buy a mint used one PM me(SLR model w/o ballhead).

Get the Zoom version. Don't even bother with the SLR version. They should have made the SLR version a ZOOM version because the Zoom version is far more durable than the SLR version.

Oops, I have the zoom version, it supports up to 6.6lbs; I was wondering about where you would get it for less than $30.

Diff = $30

I have the SLR-Zoom version of the Gorillapod, and rarely use it. It's a little cumbersome and difficult to set up, but maybe having a ball head on it would help. I would trust using a heavier setup on it either.
