I pulled out an old 70-210 Prospec lens I had with my Rebel EOS while I save for a 70-300 IS, and got this shot of an Osprey that lives at our school. They live on the lights standards for the football field, so the setting isn't very appealling, but I am more curious what your thoughts are on this lens. If this one will do for now, then I can look into upgrading a different lens. The problem I see would be the reach at 210 vs. 300. Thanks in advance.
By the way, this shot is straight out of the camera.

I have seen sharper lenses, but that one isn't bad. Look at the light on the left, it's got real good focus and definition and so do the angle irons. The bird is a little bit soft, but for a 210, your pushing it at that distance. I think that lens is good enough to keep using, but shoot stuff a bit closer to you. It's got awesome color.

I was actually really suprised with the color. The sky did not look that blue to my eye. The lights are pretty high, so I knew I would not be able to get very close. I was hoping the bird would leave the lights and I could get it in flight, but couldn't wait around any longer. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can get them a little closer.

By the 'deposits' on those lights, that looks like a favorite perch for the osprey!

They have been coming here for about 8 years now. They originally built the nest in the light standards, but it could have caused a problem once the stadium lights were turned on. Our maintenance people built them a nest that extends above the lights, hoping they would use it, and sure enough, they are here to stay. They come back every year, have two little ones, and give us plenty to watch.
