hey guys/gals,

my G3 is working is working fine with Windows 98. When the firmware update was announced, i didn't update it as I beleive in .... "If it ain't broke ... don't fix it." But, now I am getting another computer that has Windows XP. So i will use my G3 on both Windows 98 and XP.

Q: do i need to update my G3 firmware?
My camera's warranty expires in 1 month. So if there is any possibility of a camera crash during the update process, then I would like to do it now.

If I don't need to get the firmware update, then i would rather skip it.

Any experience?

If you're getting a new computer, I'd say to upgrade the firmware. You won't know until you've got it whether the new machine would have problems, and you don't want to get caught out. As long as the camera retains power (start with a fully-charged battery, or an AC adapter), the upgrade shouldn't cause any problems.

Do the update if you plan to use a 380EX flash unit.

Your G3 with V1.00 firmware will work as perfectly under XP as it does under 98SE. If you wish you can check on the issues that were addressed in the firmware update but none was specific to XP. Don't waste your time.

They weren't specific to XP, but one was a fix to USB not functioning correctly on some computers. As Canon didn't identify any specific USB controllers that were affected, it's safest to get the upgraded version before you find you need it.
