Playing the percenatge game.... the set up was intended for small birds in the reeds about 15 mtrs in front of me, low and behold out of the blue a female Kinfisher landed just 15 feet infront of me, no time to ditch the x2 as it turned out she only stayed for the one shot. Image is both sharp and soft at F8, the other downside was i cut its backside off , wish they would give you a warning when they are coming, first chance i get im gonna tie a bell around its neck. ;)
Full frame, 800mm, ISO 800, F8, 1/160th, -2/3 exp comp.

Carlton,
Cheer up. I have long reached the conclusion that birds have studied optics, and determine where they perch relative to us after they look at our lenses. My experience has always been that they simply move just out of range. You, on the other hand, have found a bird that thinks out of the box and gets too close for perfect exposures. :)

The x2 doesn't seem too detrimental on this shot!
A very nice shot, sharp in the right places. It's a shame about the tail, but what can ya do!?! :D

Too bad about the tail and I have done the same...still a nice capture in any event with great dolors and details.. and i bet if it happens again you will have the tail in the shot....and the head too of course;)

Tail or no tail...its a Beauty. I love the colours and your focus on the eye. Well done.

That's a beautiful shot. You know that the DOF for 800mm, f8 at 15 feet is only .39
inches.

Any way you slice it, it's still an awesome shot Carlton. Great complimemtary background for this color-rich bird. Makes our Belteds look like sparrows. :D
