Saw this on DPR: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=10499456

Interestingly, the post says that the firmware update can only be done by loading the update onto a CF card via a card reader. IOW, updating through USB won't work.

Good luck, 20D owners! Hope this fixes all of your problems.

That is the standard firmware update process.

In the past they've bundled a utility permitting you to load the firmware update onto a CF card via the camera's USB cable. This implies that option won't be offered for the 20D.

"Implies" - I'd wait to see what is actually released. And there's always the possibility you could use the firmware upload utility bundled with the other cameras' updates to do the job.

Maybe they got tired of repairing cameras under warranty that got knocked off the desk by someone tripping over a USB cable.

Then they should provide an external card reader as a standard part of the kit!

Wow it must be a bigger problem they are letting us believe. I had the camera lock up on me this time is said no CF :x card and locked up. I removed the battery’s and problems solved. Thing of it is each time I had to put the camera down :x and pick up an other one and keep shooting all 4  times so far. It doesn’t happen when I am not busy  . Funny that it happened this way. Maybe the camera just doesn’t like to work hard and it needs a break :? ? Who knows why it happens. I hope the firmware fixes it.

Safety factor. If an error (like a lockup) occurs while you're flashing the firmware, you will suddenly have an expensive permanent paperweight.

Honestly you should allready have an external card reader. I've got three of them for crying out loud. One of them came with my Canon i950 printer. Trust me it's worth the $20 bucks. 8)

One of the local electronics stores here was selling a USB card reader for $4.99.

Such a deal.

$4.99 or $49.99 there is just really no excuse I can think of not to have and use an external card reader.

Canon Inc. has confirmed that it plans to release a firmware update for the EOS 20D. The new firmware (Version 1.0.4) is scheduled to be posted on the Canon Inc. website no later than tomorrow, October 1. The URL will be:

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eos20d/eos20d_firmware-e.html

This firmware update (Version 1.0.4) incorporates the following changes:

1. Fixes the issue of the shutter not releasing.
2. Improves communication reliability when using some CF cards.

A full description of the new firmware and a set of installation instructions will be provided at the web site. Customers will be able to download the new firmware after supplying their camera's serial number. Installation procedures will be similar to previous firmware updates with the following exceptions:

The firmware being released on the Web will require a card reader for the update process. Therefore, it will not be possible to perform the update via a USB connection between the camera and the computer.
Once the firmware update operations are finished, it will be necessary to remove the battery from the camera and then reinsert it to have the new firmware take effect. The new firmware version will be displayed as soon as the update is finished, but it will function as the previous version until the battery is removed and replaced.

Although I have not had my camera lock up on me yet, I am looking forward to this firmware release.

Kudos Canon!

It's the 1st and there is still no update. Darn and I woke early for this. Guess I'll have to wait for the day to be complete :D

I have several as well. Bear in mind, however, that they've been, until now, a convenience, not a necessity. But if you're making use of a CF reader an absolute requirement for keeping the camera functional, it should be part of the kit. There's a disclaimer on lenses, different people have different lens requirements, and they have a bundle with a lens, so I don't consider the two as comparable examples, to ward off the comparison.

A computer and ISP are also required then. :D

Back to the topic. I'll be interested to know if this fixes the lockup problem as it does not seem to mention the lockup issue directly. :?

If you read this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=44160&postdays=0&postorder=asc&st art=0), you will see that mcouper received an official letter from Canon support stating that:
"On October 1, Canon will release a firmware update to correct the "lock up" issue found in a limited number of EOS 20D units. "

Yup.. and if you read THIS thread your reading now.. you'll see that Canon has "almost" lived up to this promise...

Well.. they provided a LINK to firmware 1.04 anyways on Oct. 1

But as of 12:17AM October 2nd Greenwich Time... there is no update... the link is aiming at nothing

>>Looks like the engineers are ahead of the webmasters. Or vice versa<<

I suspect nobody wants to be the one found holding the process up any longer than necessary. Somebody held the code dawgs' feet to the fire until they gave up a date, then business wienies got the information to the head webhead as soon as they heard it, and the webheads put it out there ASAP. So the blame stays on the code dawgs, because everyone thinks that's where it should be anyway.

Not that anyone remembers the code dawgs wanted another week in the first place before the camera was released...

Oh well, I'm not having any lockups. And for those who are, 2 days is no big deal.

Oh, well, mine won't arrive before Tuesday at the earliest (Berger Bros. Fri., and I didn't see the e-mail they sent asking to confirm so he called me, but then it was too late for it to go out before Mon.) so any time before next Friday's fine with me. I can give it a workout over the next week :{)#

I've seen the download list with and without the firmware section over the past day or so. Depends on which of their servers you happen to hit at the time. Close your browser and go in again fresh and you will probably get it. I usually get it by going to www.canoneos.com (http://www.canoneos.com), clicking the 20D and then Download Libary at the top.

This site is a standing list of documents and firmware for all of Canon's cameras. The 20D fix should pop up here as soon as it's available.

Agreed. Also remember that Monday in Japan is sometime Sunday in the US. I don't know the time difference and am not going to research it. ;) I'd expect 14-15 hours ahead of PDT.

Just a note. YOU MUST REMOVE THE BATTERY GRIP TO INSTALL THIS FIRMWARE. I just did the upgrade and had a little panic attack. The upgrade required you remove the battery from the camera to complete the update. When I updated the firmware and removed the battery from the grip for a reboot the LCD would not turn on. Removed the the grip and put the battery in the camera directly and everything worked fine. Put the grip back on and now we will see if this firmware fixed anything. So to save yourself trouble, just remove the grip before you begin :) . I dont know if this information is in the instructions from Canon but I dont read them, so for everyone else who doesnt read insturctions, this is for you (unless it isnt in the instructions, then this is for everyone!) :)
