Thought I'd start a thread for the canon ef24-85 3.5-4.5. Not an L, but still a nice little lens with USM and FTM.

I really liked my 24-85 but I like my Sigma 17-70 even more. I found that 24mm wasn't wide enough on a 1.6 crop camera. I sold it for $200 to help pay for my Sigma 17-70. I find the Sigma sharper and it also has much better macro capability. At first I missed the USM and longer reach, but it didn't take long to get over it.

No photos to offer as I used it on a film body, but I had one of these lenses and was very happy with it. Well constructed, fast AF, good range, its basically the lens I most regret getting rid of. It makes a good walk around lens for folks who can't afford L prices.

just picked up one used on Ebay. Question, will a new hood for this fit the older lens?

The 24-85 takes a EW-73 lens hood (bayonet mount) but uses 67mm filters. There are lots of hoods for sale on Ebay. Real ones and also Chinese copies.

Yes, I think the 'II" has flocking inside, but the "I" might also.

Found on the Net:
The Canon EW-73 lens hood was made specifically to work only with the Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM zoom lens. There have been two interchangeable versions of this hood, the original EW-73 and the more recent EW-73 II. From the exterior, these two models are almost indistinguishable (except for the Roman numeral “II” added to the model number). Either one will fit perfectly on the lens. The only difference between them is that the EW-73 had a flat black painted inner surface and the EW-73 II uses black "flocking" inside instead.

I dont have any pics handy but i having being using this lens for 8/9 years on an EOS10 film and on my 30D but find its not quite wide enough at 24x 1.6, still deciding if i should trade it for a sigma 17-70 2.8/4 or keep it and buy a 17-50 2.8 sigma/tamron as i need a faster lens as well ?

I use it on my 20D.
I was looking for a cheap lens to put on the 20 when I upgraded to a 50D. I wanted to be able to leave it in my vehicle for those times you wished you had a camera with you.
It gets used a lot. Friends know its there and don't hesitate to use it.
It has its faults, could be wider, not pin sharp.
It has its strengths, excellent auto focus (fast and accurate), Rich vibrant color and of course cheap.
Bottom line it delivers a lot of good photos.

After the last 3 events I shot with primes only (indoors with fill), I set forth on adding a standard zoom for just such work...and for similar outdoor events as well.
I did not want to spend loads of money on a zoom I will hardly use, so I narrowed the list down to two, the 28-135 IS and the 24-85. I decided on the latter since it's a tad wider and will be used on the 1D MKII. One came up FS the other day, and I nabbed it. Got it today, and preliminary shots with flash look good, real good. I tried some indoor low light just because, forget it...not worth it.
Vignetting with wide open shots on the 1Ds were not as bad to me as has been claimed in countless other places. Once again, it just goes to show you don't knock it until you try it. Yeah, the 24-85 vignettes on the FF with WO shots, but my 35/2 WO vignetting is far more prominent...and I do not mind it.
I'll post some typical samples later tonight, otherwise, I am quite pleased with the performance of the 24-85 and it will fill the bill quite nicely when called upon.

Cats, my only models...
Anyway, these were just test images with flash. YN-465 bounced and reflecter card used, FEL used for most shots. All shots are uncropped, wide open for respective focal length (though future real world use will be stopped down) and iso 400...unless otherwise noted. Post is my typical DPP edits, and all examples were sharpened using DPP's USM (3,7,1). First set will be FF, 1Ds, shots, second set will be 1.3X crop. Very last shot will be one available light indoors, 1Ds.
Yes, I have also noticed the corners on wide open shots lack sharpness and detail on the FF and less so with the 1.3x. Furthermore, WO 85mm FF shots really take a hit in the corners. This all gets better with stopping down. Again, this lens will be used on the 1.3x crop body and stopped down.
This lens will work out great for it's intended purpose, I am most pleased...
FF, 1Ds set.
Only direct flash shot, and stopped down @ f/5

I used to have a 24-85, and while it is a very good lens for the money, 24mm is not very wide on a crop camera. Depending on your shooting style, you may find 24mm limiting.
The 18-55 IS is a very sharp lens and 18mm is great for indoor shots or landscapes. You might consider buying another 18-55 IS for about $100.
Another option is too save up for an ultra-wide like the Sigma 10-20mm or the Canon 10-22mm.
A third option is to save up and upgrade your 24-85 to the 15-85 some day. The 15-85 is one fantastic lens on a crop body.

by the way, that photo above was only edited in Lightroom 3 using all RAW adjustments for contrast and straightening converging verticals. There was no sharpening and I added some red shadows and greenish highlights in split toning. Considering how much PP people do even with L lenses, this lens gets the job done fine.

Just bought this lens, the first test shot - wide open at 85mm.
I really like the size and weight of the lens!

Does alot better on my xti than my 5d. I do like how wide 24mm is for me though. Keep them coming.

Just picked this lens up from Cesium, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the quality and versatility of this lens. It's nice and compact, and with the price compared to the 24-105mm, I'm more than happy with it on my 5D!

just got my copy - the silver version with hood. I'm going to try using it on my 20d as a walkaround lens before I upgrade to a 60d or a 5diii

A few from this quite often forgotten about lens. Maybe not as sharp as the 24-70L or 24-105 L lenses, but still not all that bad of a lens in a pinch. Esp for the price. At least IMHO.

I'm quite impressed with this little gem! I've just picked a 28-135mm IS USM and it gives as much the same sharpness at ideal conditions and apertures... I think both lenses are the best zooms I've tried on full-frame, mid-range level.
I was going to sell it, but i'll keep it at least for a while... :-)

I just bought this today and took it for a test drive in the backyard. I like it - especially because it was $100 used and came with a Lowepro lens case. The focus ring isn't smooth though. It's too bad there isn't a profile for this lens in DPP or Lightroom.
