Website with Essays for Amateurs and Beginners

I first took up 35mm photography as a hobby 28 years ago. Around 3 years back I got into website design and created a site aimed at amateur photographers. Many out there may not be able to afford top gear, but still want to do the best they can.

My heart sinks when I open a mag for amateurs and read, "... many amateur photographers forget that great shots need great lenses" (Digital Photography User). This is nonsense.

Anyway, my site tries to deal with the amateur side of photography and includes a gallery.

This is a great idea! There can't be too many sites for beginners, & I may recommend yours to my students after I have time to completely review it. I hope you suggest to them that this forum would be a big help to them, too.

...you might tell them why you say, " Be extra careful when using a wide-angle lens. Beware of lens hoods that may not be compatible with your chosen lens.", and add "because you may get image cut-off at smaller apertures. Use the depth of field preview to check, or if you don't have one, take a pic at f/16 & look at the corners to guard against cut-off."

Just a few lines to let you know that I have taken your advice and revised the text which now reads:

"Always use a lens hood to protect the lens elements from bright light. If you use a lens without a hood your images may suffer from the effects of non-image-forming light that reaches the sensor or film. A lens hood that is not compatible with the lens in use may encroach into the lens's field-of-view and darken the corners of your images."

I've also moved it to another section. Thanks for the input!
