Canon 420ex Ok to use on Canon XTi?

Is the Canon 420ex OK to use on the Canon XTi even though it's not a E-TTL II flash? I believe it's only E-TTL I.

I hope it's okay, as I just picked up a 420EX today for my XTi.

Just a quick question, though. Does the 420EX also draw power from the camera itself, or do the 4 AA batteries provide all of the power?
