so its my birthday tomorrow and the parents what to get me a few photography subscriptions....

just looking for some opinions on them...

my girlfriend bought me 2 magazines for christmas, one was Digital Photo Pro (http://www.digitalphotopro.com/) and the second one was Nature Photographer (http://www.naturephotographermag.com/)

I really didn't dig the Digital Photo Pro one at all. It just talked about the different photographers and their life stories, I found it quite boring. There was no explanation or talk about the actual photos you were looking at. There was some talk about the construction of lenses and such, again not too interested in that.

In the nature mag, every single photo had the technical details about the image (exposure, iso, camera body etc etc) which I found super helpful. The mag articles also told stories, basically by the photographer, where they went what they brought how the adventure went etc etc It actually inspired me to try and go out and take some winter shots. When a magazine inspires and teaches me something, I think that when its successful.

wondering if there is any other mags like this out there? I'm not really into any type of fashion photography, or those mags that just brag about the newest, latest and most expensive gear.

thanks for any tips :)

All the major mags "pride" themselves on early previews and reviews of the latest and greatest so that's a factor that's hard to get past.

There are "artsy" publications out there like "Lenswork" and "American Photographer" that are more akin to printed photo galleries. Or, rather than the photo mags themselves, maybe you might consider mags devoted to the subject or subjects you like to shoot. I find lots of inspiration in the Aviation trade mags and the publications of various flying-related organizations.

Just a thought...

BTW, Happy Birthday

There is enough on the web to keep you reading until you are 90 years old. Tell your parents what gear you need.

I enjoy Rangefinder Magazine (http://www.rangefindermag.com/index2.tml).
It does do a lot of interviews with photographers but the interviews are mostly about technique.

totally agree with the web comments, but I just started a new job and there is zero reading material in the lunch room. I am the kinda of person who NEEDS to read when I eat! lol don't ask

so thats when these mags would come in super handy
