autofocus question for 1D users

when you shoot sports do you set the AF to automatic selection or do you put it into manual selection and just use the middle AF point?

I started out using auto but have since switched to center and here is why.

For starters the 1D still gets thrown off by the "wrong" subject. Granted it happens very fast and snappy, it still happens.

2nd I'm pretty sure the center point is more sensative

lastly, i wasnt sure, so i asked a pro at a game...he said he used the center.

I think the biggest godsend aside from it's sheer speed is the ability to use the FEC button to focus. It allows you to prefocus to a spot without the lens going all over the place from other objects. In a sense it's like having one shot and AI servo at the same time, as a matter of fact i rarely use one shot.

I completely agree....

For sporty type pictures I use the centre spot and have also set the AE button as an auto focus activator. Just found it better to get the focus without spending (often) a few seconds with shutter half depressed - and the IS working overtime.

Took a bit of getting used to though!

Thanks, didnt know about that. Is there a list somewhere of what all the functions do, some of them pop up in the manual but many leave me looking like this -> ???

yeah, i was looking thru my manual last night and i saw the CF 17 expansion option. the extra 7 or 13 points looks like it would help a tremendous amount.
