Just picked up this lens to make ring shots at weddings easier. So post your shots with this lens for the archive....
My mom asked me to take a shot of her new ring to email to her sister. Shot is around a 1:2 or 1:3...dont remember! Just a hand held test shot....

I'll take a few more of various things around the house and post them later...wife has me running to the store now. :( Every time a B&H box hits the front door my to do list triples it seems!

I also really would like to see more...
I'm very interested in this lens as my first dedicated macro.
Few questions:
1) Does it focus slow?
2) Is the focusing loud?
3) Do you find 50mm to be a bit short, to where you have to get pretty close? (Almost the the point of being uncomfortable)
I have used my photography teachers Canon 50mm f/2.8, the images were great, focusing was amazing, but the mount to my camera was pretty hard to get it on\off... And I can't remember if 50mm was too short

To answer your questions....
1. Yes it does, as do most macro lenses
2. Kinda...varies by user, its not like my L's, but i don't thinks its to bad
3. For what I need it for, no. If I wanted to shoot bugs, yes. At 1:1 you are about 4-5 inches away at most.
I looked at the canon 50 2.8 macro, but decided not to get it because its only 1:2 max. Not that I'll really ever use the sigma at 1:1, but I like to have that option.
Here are a few more I took tonight when I was bored....No sharpening applied to any of them. Adjusted contrast and exposure, and bumped the sat up on the animals....

I picked this up last week. A very decent lens. good build, the AF is fine for a non HSM/USM Macro, not too noisy at all, very sharp, good bokah and colours, small so for me good to slip in my bag for travel. I just did one test shot wide open when I got it and that is here below. My other shots awaiting PP but lookin' good.

I was about to buy the Sigma 50 when a used Canon 60 became available. Most macro shooters prefer the longer FL but I'm really liking the short working distance. It allows me to hold the camera with 1 hand and the off-camera flash with another to shoot wedding rings.
I also find the focus speed of the EF-S 60 to be nice & fast so it serves well as a regular lens too.

Yeah, I had the 60mm and it's the sharpest lens I have owned. I was less impressed with the AF tho' ... seemed slow and tended to hunt in more general use. Sigma seems much better in that regard.

I love my Sigma 50mm f/2.8, Not only is it a stunning macro lens which stays sharp even when it's wide open but it doubles as a wonderful portrait lens, especially on a cropped sensor but it works well on FF too.

Well, it has its limitations (short MFD, slow AF) but you can't really argue for the price. AF speed isn't really an issue since for macro you'll probably want to use manual focus anyway. It's not internal focus so on this shot I had a bit of trouble composing, as the front of the lens would run into the flower petals. Other than that, it's a stellar lens.

You can't really go hunting with a 50mm macro, you have to find somewhere where bugs will come and set up your equipment and wait patiently for them. Or create an enclosure that they can't get out of.

No, just a different technique than running around shoving your camera at them and hoping they don't run away.
The key is to find flowers and plants where they will come and sit very still and wait for them.

Just ordered this piece. Hopefully I get it tomorrow! Sold my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro a couple months back and regret it a bit. Can't find any used ones at a good price (here in Sweden), and Canon seems to have stopped making the model to benefit the new 100mm IS... So I ended up buying the Sigma. The price was far better then all the other macro lenses on the market ($400 new)... Seems that you guys are satisfied with it?!
Hope to see more photos in this thread!

AF is some what slow/loud but other then that I think its a decent lens to use for portraits, eventually you may find yourself wanting something either longer in focal length, or with a wider aperture for portraits though.

I just picked one of these up. Not sure if the extending barrel is going to cause me problems with some subjects. Hope to give it a try soon. As always, there are some nice pictures in the sample archives.

Wow JoeyBowman I like the color in your bottle photo. Lots of great shots here! I'm going to have to come back and post some of my own with this lens. Hope some others can post some of their examples too.

I just ordered one of these used. Very curious how it'll work for me, and it looked from the pictures like this might have the newer EX barrel coating.
I already own the Canon 100mm and a macro-takumar 50mm m42 manual lens, so some comparisons will definitely be made - especially between the Sigma and the Takumar - which is legendary in it's simplicity as well as an oddball in bokeh at F/8.
I hope this will be able to fill the void that the Tokina 35mm macro left me when I sold it to move to full frame. I simply love the look of wider angled macro for flowers and nature.
Edit: nevermind... The crappy seller fell through by emailing me "sorry, I already sold the lens" after agreeing on the price but before sending me his account number ._.
Guess I'll have to play with my Tak some more for now.

I just bought myself one of these and can not wait to get my hands on it... The joys of living in the Arse end of nowhere means it is going to be next Saturday before I get my hands on it :(

Good news, I found another one and just received it :)
Got a better deal on this one, so quite happy with this. I had it shipped to my work address, and of course I forgot a camera body today, but I'll take it for a spin tomorrow. Looks nice and compact though. This might be one of those lenses that can earn a permanent place in my camera bag...
Side by side comparison with the Macro-Takumar 50mm f/4 preset coming very soon. I just have to find / setup a decent scene in both 1:1 range as well as a normal (near infinity) image.
